Reservations Problem / Questions

Posted on by 5

Good afternoon,

Not sure how to explain my questions so I will jump into what is happening and the problem its creating:

In our main warehouse, we have our A and B bins set to PUTPICK and our C bins set to PUTAWAY. We also have three satellite warehouses that are all set to PUTAWAY bins with our overflow so that our Tasklets only pull from our main warehouse and A+B bins.

Our customer service department recently started using reservations and if the reservation amount exceeds what is in the A+B home bins, that item simply wont get picked- even though we have plenty available in overflow. Is there a way to direct the reservation to pull from other bins or locations before the home bins? Are reservations based on bin ranking, or is there another system at play here?

Thank you in advance for any clarity on the matter.

    RE: Reservations Problem / Questions

Hi Bryan, thanks for your input. To respond to your points-

Yes, we have our main warehouse and then three other physical locations down the road that we shuttle our goods between. All of these bins are set to PUTAWAY bins.

    1. Correct, I only want our Tasklets to pull from the PUTPICK bins. I set it up this way because I didn't want the Tasklet to pull inventory from our satellite locations as it was making it difficult to make movements when the available quantity to take was reduced due to the pick. To make the movement on a particular pallet that had picks on it required my shipping lead to remove that location on the specific pick in OWR - then one of my material handlers could make the movement- then shuttle the pallet from location to the next or pull down from a C level via forklift - then the shipping lead had to put the new location back on the pick. When we are doing 60-130 orders with multiple boxes a day, this is extremely cumbersome. Having all C levels and satellite locations set as PUTAWAY bins has resolved that issue and has proven much more efficient.

    2. That's what I was afraid of, I need to have the reservations point to inventory we have in other locations first. It clearly can reserve items in both PUTAWAY and PUTPICK bins, its surprising that there is no control over how this is handled. A good example happened yesterday where an item was reserved for a quantity of 9,000. The home can only hold 2,310 and all other quantities were at another location. Well the reservation "pulled" from the home first and we are unable to put any picks for that item unless I have 4 pallets brought over and placed on a FLOOR bin to make it pickable. It has been such a time waste for my team.

Perhaps there is a better way to do this?

    RE: Reservations Problem / Questions

    Hello,

To achieve your goal Bin Ranking is what you need. Let's outline a few definitions around Bin Type and Ranking and how they work:

    Type -

    Put-Away:

Because these bins are not used for picking, either for production orders or shipments, your use of a Put Away type bin might be limited, but this bin type could be useful if you have purchased a large quantity of items. Bins of this type should always have a low bin-ranking, so that when received items are put away, other higher-ranking PUTPICK bins fixed to the item are put away first. If you are using this type of bin, you must regularly perform bin replenishment so that the items stored in these bins are also available in PUTPICK or PICK type bins.

    PutPick:

Items in bins that are suggested for both the put-away and pick functions. Bins of this type probably have different bin rankings. You can set up your bulk storage bins as this type of bin with low bin rankings compared to your ordinary pick bins or forward picking area bins.

    Bin Ranking:

A measure for prioritizing replenishment movements. This indicates which bin should be replenished first. A bin with a high bin ranking number has a higher priority than one of a lower number

    Setup Bin Ranking:

So based on what you re trying to accomplish, unless you are running Replenishment continuously the PUTPICK bins that reservations are directed too, will NOT see the Put Away Bins. I would recommend using Bin Ranking and change the Put Away Bin Types to PUTPICK Bin Types to make the reservation. You know the process better than I but if I want to keep Bulk Inventory separate, I do setup Bin Type Put Away and teach users the Replenishment functionality or setup a Job Queue to run this daily.

Hope this helps explain the fields and how they work.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    RE: Reservations Problem / Questions

    Hi there,

Thank you for posting your question on Communities.   There are a some different thoughts and points I have for this I can provide...as well as provide some valuable documentation links that may help clear some of your questions.

    1.  The Picking algorithm will generally only pick qty from Pickable bins...So even if you weren't using reservations, if those items were in Put-away Bins, the Pick would not pull those in....being they are not a Pickable Bin.

    2.  When Reserving, the Reservation engine reserves quantity in Inventory, there really isn't a way to reserve it to a specific Bin...and reservations aren't based off of bin ranking.  With Reservations and how that integrates in the warehouse, there are many subtopics on that area here that may be helpful...

Other than those two points, to be honest, I'm not quite sure I'm clear on the how you have these 3 satellite warehouses you mentioned set up.  Do you mean here that these are all 3 different Locations...so you have the Main Location and then have 3 additional Locations?  And in these 3 additional locations, these are all setup as DP&P Locations, and all the bins within these 3 locations are Putaway Bins?  Do I have that right?

I am taking this down a bit of a deeper and different path here, although could be relevant, but if you are using SKU's that are setup as Transfer SKUs, the planning engine could fulfill this Main Location's demand when it hits a certain demand trigger point, so it transfers from a satellite location.  But this is something you'd want to have a NAV/BC SCM Consultant assist you with.
