Second source - Phase in/Out

Hi!!

We're using Ax 2012 R3.

In our products BOMs we often have to change a part A with a new/different part B.

  • This might be an equivalent part (part B = second source), because we're currently out of stock of the other (part A = original part).
  • Most often, this is because we're making a change to the product. In that case we want to use all of part A, and then switch over to part B (phase in/phase out). This is quite complicated because we need to keep track of how much stock we still have of part A, before doing the change in the BOM.

How can Ax do this automatically for us: make the products with part A, until the stock is finished, and then switch to part B ?

Part A and part B have different Item numbers.

Many thanks,

Adriaan

It cannot "automatically" do this out of the box. The alternate item functionality is for sales orders, not BOM's. You can manage this but it is manually, so have both on the BOM and time date the change, but ultimately it is manual unless you customise the system to do what you want.

As Steven said, you can't do this automatically with a BOM item.  If you had a Formula Item, you could use Plan Group / Priority on the Formula lines to accomplish this.  Formulas can do just about everything that BOM's can do except be configured, maybe its worth it to you to investigate.

    Hi, thanks for your replies.

I also found this article timsaxblog.wordpress.com/.../alternate-items-in-formulas-in-ax-2012 on the same subject, but it has the same conclusion: "unfortunately this functionality is only available to Formula items – it’s not available to traditional BOM items, which is a shame, because I’ve come across this scenario in those discrete manufacturing environments more often"

    Best regards,

    Adriaan

You could create a sub BOM that shows item A made out of item B.

If A is a bought part then change the default order type for A to production. (or vice versa)

Mrp will plan to use up any stock and on order quantity of  A

The first time you get a planned order to make A, which will not make sense if you buy) and also to buy B as a component to make A,  you will have much less inventory and then deal with the phase in phase out more easily. At that point you can inactivate the sub assembly bom.

Wow! That's a really creative approach! I like it. We're going to try this.
