What is a "Buyer Group" field consist of within Dynamics AX 2012

A "Buyer Group" is a field required within AX in order to generate reports based on Vendor performance on product receipts (early/on-time/late). This buyer group is also found within the New Vendor tab and also found in the employee management tab.

Any suggestions as to what Buyer group could possibly be applied to?

Buyer group is exactly that, used for filtering / reporting in the client. It can be assigned to released products as well. I suggest clients use it to show who is in charge of what. What person buys from what vendors, or buys what products, etc.

Its a quick an easy way to filter planned orders if you are using planning.

Generally in purchasing departments vendors and/or items are assigned to people to manage, those people are the buyer group in my eyes because it is how the business segregates the data.

Where you have a purchasing department individuals will be responsible for a set or group of items, the buyer group allows filtering and segregation of the items, in planning screens you can simply filter to analyse the items you are responsible for. However there is no direct link between the user and the buyer group from the buyer group, you simply configure the buyer group to reflect the worker responsible, or another categorisation which is assigned to the purchaser responsible, the choice is yours.
