Install Microsoft Dynamics CRM Report Authoring Extension (Visual Studio 2015)

Hello,

We recently installed CRM 2016 (On Premise) we would like to install the Dynamics CRM Report Authoring Extension. However, we seem to be running into an issue with Visual Studio 2015, the extension installer says there are problems and the look at the foillowing KB Article for pre-reqs:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699754(v=crm.8).aspx#report_auth_gen_req

You must install the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Report Authoring Extension on a PC that has the following software:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2015, Microsoft Visual Studio 2013, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, or Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

We have VS2015 installed, we have the SQL Server Data Tools installed, these seem to be the only 2 pre-reqs but yet we still get the following error:

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Environment Diagnostic Wizard

Some of the required components are missing. For more information, click Details.

For a list of the required components, see the Microsoft Dynamics 365 2016 Reporting Authoring Extension (with SQL Server Data Tools support) download page: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=671952

I did see some posts/comments about editing .rpl or .xml files to get this to work with VS2015. I do NOT want to hack this to work, so can anyone tell me does this extension support Visual Studio 2015, we are actually running Visual Studio 2017 for all of our developers, why we can't get support for the latest product is beyond me.....

Is there any chance this will work with VS 2015 or VS2017 anytime in the near future?

Thanks in advance

-daniel

    Hi

In the same page, did you read this line:

Compatibility with Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 requires the May 2017 update for Report Authoring Extension. Get it now from the Microsoft Download Center.

Normally when you have a VS 2015 and the compatible SQL Data Tools installed, you would be able to install the Report Authoring Extensions. Would you mind to update the VS 2015 to update 3 and try again? Or maybe PC restart might do the trick.

Yes and I downloaded that and got the same results. However, did the file change because the download size was exactly the same for both files downloaded. I also did do an update and verified we do currently have Visual Studio 2015 with Update 3. Still same error. Any additional suggestions?

I'd love to know if anyone has ever found the solution to this problem. I have a brand new install of Windows 10 (1703), Visual Studio 2015 with Update 3 (the single install where Update 3 is slipstreamed in), the May 2017 update of the report authoring extensions and still no luck.

So less than 10 minutes later I have a solution that worked for me. The first time I ran the SSDT install, I selected all options. It failed. I finally got it installed but I had only selected the first option, SQL Server Database. It dawned on me that I probably needed to check the "SQL Server Reporting Services" option. I ran the installer again, selected that option and it successfully installed. Once that successfully installed I re-ran the "Setup BIDS Extensions" and it passed the environment checks and successfully installed.

That may not be the solution for everyone, but it did the trick for me.
