Best Practice: Item (Type: Service), Resources, Resource Groups

Hello everyone,

can someone explain me the best practice for items (type: Service) and resources/resource groups. When do I use what?

My starting point
I work in a craft business and have created every craftsman as a resource in Business Central, because I can book working times for a resource. I have also grouped them into resource groups, e.g. all electricians in one group.

My problem
I can only select items or resources on a quote. But when I wrote the offer, I didn't know which craftsman is going to the construction site. All I know is that I need an electrician there for eight hours, for example. However, I can't add resource groups to an offer.

My question
Are service type items made for this purpose? So should I create the resource group as well as item? Can I link them? Do I have to enter the exact hours manually later?
Or am I better off creating a general resource for the electrician and using it on the quotes?

Thank you for your help and best regards
Nico

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I have already read the documentation, but it does not answer my questions.

I think a generic resource for Electrician makes sense for your quote and turning the quote into an order. Once you assign a specific person, you can update the order.

I agree with Kim's suggestion to you.

But if your orders are a bit more complex and involves several resources and elements of fixed prices you could also consider using the jobs module in Business Central. That gives you some more flexibility than the order but are a little bit more complex to handle.
