Period balance won't roll forward

I have been attempting to migrate one of our external systems into our current GP structure, which included setting up the accounts, departments, currency, etc (in our test system).  We then posted the December balances into 2008 so they would roll into 2009 and tried to do a year end close process for 08.  The historical year box is already checked for the 2008 fiscal period and the only year we can close is 2009 . .?  We figured it already closed the year but the balances would not roll forward into 2009. We have YTD trial balance data to enter, but need to have the Dec balances in for the financial statements to be correct.  Am I missing a step in this process?  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks!

Just want to be clear, you say that the Historical Year box for 2008 is checked already?  Can you uncheck it?  If you can't, someone probably has run this year end close routine.  Even if it was closed already, you will be allowed to post to that historical year with your 2008 balances and it should create the Balance brought forward entries and retained earnings calculation.  You can always post one year back.  Can you look and see that the accounts you expect to be brought forward are marked as "Balance Sheet" accounts on the account card?

Thank you for your response. . . yes, the balances are marked as "balance sheet" in the account card. . .when I originally posted the Dec 08 balances the batch failed for those accounts that I didn't mark as balance sheet.  This is the first time I'm attempting to migrate another division's financials into GP (we usually do it manually).  All other setup worked well so far but can't figure out why the balances won't roll into the next year.  I really only need to have 2009 financials in the system, but the BS won't be right without the beginning balance.  Maybe there is another step I am missing?  Perhaps there is another account setup item that needs to be corrected?

Yes, posted 12/31 balances and we attempted to run the year end closing process, but the historical year box was already checked (and would not let us uncheck the box) and the only year available for performing the year end close was 2009, which we obviously don't want to close yet . . . yes all accounts are "balance sheet" posting type.

Thank you for your help, Mariano.  You seem like you understand my problem perfectly.  I will let you know if this works!

Oh, don't worry, everything we are doing is in test environment at this point . . .

It worked, thank you so much!  I was able to perform the year end close process and the balances rolled into 2009 with no issues.  Now I can start loading YTD activity and continue testing.  I really appreciate your help, thanks again!
