Huge performance issue on on-premise production environment (v21.3)

We have a problem with the production environment and need some fast help.

For some reason, posting documents on our Business Central production environment (on-premise) works very slowly. For example, we need about 30+ second to post purchase order with only 3 lines, the same is on sales documents. Posting general journal or payment reconciliation journal running more than 2 hours for 2000 rows.

Creating and viewing documents have no that kind of performance problem.

We turned off all extensions, server performance is good (servers always running on less or equal 30% od capacity). We enabled telemetry on Azure (at least as far as we know how to enable it and read problems). On each slow thread reports show that it works on the Base Application level.

If you have experience with this kind of unexpected work and troubleshooting or know someone who can help us, please contact me.

We are not very experienced in Telemetry and SQL and cannot imagine what can be problem, so any help or advice will be helpful. Thank you in advance!

    Hi,

Try to use manually cost adjustment, since usually automatic cost adjustment takes ages to complete. I usually have a batch job that runs report for cost adjustment each night. My client has on average 10000 transfer lines where they had issues with posting of transfer order that took 4 hours to complete, and as I changed automatic cost adjustment to manually using biatch job, it takes now max 30 minutes to complete the posting of transfer order.

And, try to use batch jobs for posting of documents, if you can. Thus will avoid locking of tables and improve performance of complete system.

You can read more on cost adjustment here learn.microsoft.com/.../design-details-cost-adjustment

    Thank you

    BR Damjan

If you have an issue posing general journal lins then it is not cost adjustment causing your issues.

You should first check out that your middle tire server have enough free memory and CPU.

Then you should start to look at bottlenecks on the SQL side. Performance issues like the one you experience is usually caused by one or more issues on your SQL server / service.

Dear Damjan, thank you for your answer and advice, but it is not going only for inventory item and only for sales/purchase document. The issue persist on all posting document side (g/l journals also).

Dear Inge, thank you... Do you have some recommendations how to track SQL server/service issues?

If you think about application server as middle tire server, the CPU an Memory consumption is always lower than 30%, the same as I already described for DB server...

Thank you in advance for all your advice.

What kind of SQL database are you running? Azure SQL or a VM with a SQL server installed?

SQL server is installed on VM by client. It is SQL 2019 v15.0 Standard Edition

I would start with the storage solution for the SQL server. Have it always been slow or did it suddenly start?

How much free space are there in the database, how is DB growth configured? The SQL database for BC should always have at least 30% free space.  And if the DB gets full you need to make sure that it is grown with a good chuck every time so you do not need to do frequent DB expansions.

Dear Inge, I totally forget to tell you that this production environment is totally new environment (client start work on 1st January). We only have some transaction on that environment (approximately 2000 posted sales invoices, 50 posted sales orders, some inventory documents, and about 500 posted payment reconciliations. And we have performance problem from few day ago but yesterday it was escalated to "next level" :)

If you have some time I will appreciate to discuss with you all our setups on e-mail or teams or... Thank you sooo much!

Stefano Demiliani 's blog might have some great tips for you to check out.

    demiliani.com/.../

My current employment prohibits me from involving me directly in cases like this one except from what i can do in forums / blogs etc.

But i think you can contact Stefano and check out if he can have a discussion with you.
