Hi, want to see if anyone has ever used store operations manager remotely and for multiple locations. Our company has several locations and we have some area managers that we want to be able to access their various stores remotely and place PO run reports and get basically real time info. We are not interested in HQ manager on these machines because there is certain functionality that will be lost.... we strictly want to put Store ops manager on the remote machine and possibly just connect to the database so store ops manager has something to read, similar to the way hq manager works on the hq server. if anyone has done this and succeeded please let me know

I use some kind of trick, well I used one store operation manager program to generate store specific PO, transfers processing etc. The trick is that you have communcation with all databases. This is for sure is first mandatory requirement, secondly I have one small tool which allow me to select whcih store to go on and then setting of that store applied. I will check this tool made long time before for some of my customers. But I can help making this tool or developing it again for you FREE of charge.
We use LogMeIn Central to handle remote connections to our POS registers (trouble shooting,etc.) for an 18 store deployment.
In addition, we have outfitted some older PCs in our stores with SO Mgr to access the SO Database (also resident on our RMS POS Register 1) so that managers have access (via LogMeIn) to reports, POs, Journals, etc. with out the necessity of going into HQ or interupting sales at the POS. (And without not needing to know how change databases in SO Admin).
We also install a PDF printer driver (any of them - PDF Creator, Bullzip, etc - work fine) so that managers can print reports to PDF & transfer them to wherever they want.
So far it works well - for file transfer you could consider Box , Skydrive, etc. to move reports around from location to location.
For summary comparisons between locations HQ is still the way to go.

Hi Everyone,
Been following this post and Jeff is correct - To handle this issue of being able to run RMS Manager from anywhere safely you need to use LogMeIn Pro - This is the way LogMeIn works - You install it on the computer you want to access and use the program thru the internet as if you were standing in front of the computer itself. It's cost around $69.95 a year, we have been using it for over 200 clients for 9 years now and our customers love being able to access their reports, make PO's while sitting on the beach in FL. And if you have the knowledge you can set your databases up on one machine and switch them every time you need to access a different store.
Hope this helps
Shawn
Hey Jeff, with LogMeIn Pro can I install it on one machine at our main location, and then the free version on the machines at the other two stores (these two machines have the databases on them for those stores)? We use HQ but can't get reports like POs received for the other stores. Unless we are doing something wrong. Thanks!
Thanks, Jeff. I didn't know the pro version could do that.

@cgoff,
No, use the Pro's feature of the background task. There is nothing to setup. It will give you a desktop and log into SO Manager as usual. The person standing in front of it will never know about it.
@Jerry,
Not everyone can get/afford 30MB down. We have a 3 store customer in Albuquerque that barely gets 56k for his $60 per month, per store. As far as PCI issues, if you open a port for RDP there is a possible issue with Man in the Middle attacks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack. Every PCI checker checks for an RDP opening. If you are using a VPN tunnel for RDP, then its not an issue.
To go along with changing the stores, one must also change the database name and IP of each server in SO Admin each time you log in too. That can be done via a batch file to change the Registry settings Oh, then the user needs to remember which store one is working one too as they all look the same.
I'm not saying it can't be done. One just has to be smart about it. We used to do it before we started using a remote control software other than RDP.
Jeff, I completely disagree with you on the VPN thing. Here in NY cablevision offers 30 megs, and that is amazing, but 6 is plenty. A VPN will give cgoff everything he wants and maintain security. With a vpn he can assign each store an ip standard, like 192.168.1, 192.168.2, 192.168.3, etc. Then he can log into each store via store manager easily, and I don't understand why that wouldn't be pic compliant.

jeff i like where this is going, we already use log me in pro and utilize the file manger function of it for simple file transfers and such , and im aware that you can use store ops manager from any pc on the network.... now if there were a way to hook into the database with store ops manager through the logmein file manager that might work for what we want, is this possible ... if it is can you point me in the right direction
First, you guys need to forget about Remote Desktop as it is not PCI compliant. Man in the Middle issues.
Second. VPN is slow. For you guys VPNing HQ, stop it. HQ encrypts all traffic anyway, why slow it even more.
Check out LogMeIn Pro as well as other remote control programs. They offer the option to connect to the computer in the background and will not disrupt the user in front of it. https://secure.logmein.com/products/pro/features.aspx With LogMeIn, install the Pro version on the database machine and the Free version on the rest or vice versa. If you have a lot of machines to log into (we have over 1000), consider buying an annual license to LogMeIn Central (<$299) to manage them.
Lastly, you can use any computer in the store to run Manager, not just the machine with the database on it.
we want to have store operation manager for 2 locations installed onto one pc that can remotely access either of the two databases at any given time. We do not want to RDP or VNC into the systems because the store db is located on the POS and we do not want to interrupt the store associates if/when they are assisting customers. we simply want to access the 2 distinct databases through store operations manager remotely .... hopefully that makes a bit more sense...
