Store ops manager for multiple stores

Hi, want to see if anyone has ever used store operations manager remotely and for multiple locations.  Our company has several locations and we have some area managers that we want to be able to access their various stores remotely and place PO run reports and get basically real time info.  We are not interested in HQ manager on these machines because there is certain functionality that will be lost.... we strictly want to put Store ops manager on the remote machine and possibly just connect to the database so store ops manager has something to read, similar to the way hq manager works on the hq server.  if anyone has done this and succeeded please let me know

    Hello cgoff,

Store Operations Manager is not intended for remote connections via WAN, VPN, etc.

I would reccomend using a Remote Desktop Connection or something similar (logmein, VNC, etc) to connect to to your machines at the locations to use SO Manager.

Trent.b is correct. We connect to remote SO databases from SO Manager all the time to test that replacement hardware is configured correctly. However, it's only barely functional over WAN and I would not recommend it for a daily driver. It degrades perfomance on both ends. You'll get much better results just using RDP or VNC to connect to a desktop in the store and work that way. If you have a store server in each location you may have access to multiple logins.

Every multi-location setup I have done has a vpn implemented, for both speed and security, and I agree with the others concerning that.

Having said that, you can remotely access another store by 1. setting your so administrator to the store (ip\database name) and you would have to forward port 1433 on the remote router. Just watch out for hackers!. Best to have a vpn, really.

    Hello Gerald,

I would just like to reiterate that this configuration is in no way supported by Microsoft, is not PCI compliant, and we strongly reccomend that you do not do this.

Yes, I agree and strongly recommend a vpn for such things. Truth is HQ is not cheap and not everone has it in their budget. By the way, having port 3389 open on your router is not that much better than 1433 or 34200, especially if you have a strong sql password. So what open ports on a router are PCI compliant?

My last comment on this issue is that HQ is an very good program for managing such things. It allows for excellent control and uniformity of sales, item, PO, and store transfer management & reporting.

If you need more functionality than what is built in, a lot can be done with custom programming - even automated worksheets! If it is a matter of budget, that is one thing, otherwise I suggest you rethink HQ.

And you still should have a vpn...

thanks for the suggestions, we will have to look into it some more, most of the ideas suggested have already been tossed around here.  We already run HQ in our corporate offices and you are correct it does offer quite a good amount of functionality, but giving hq manager to a store manager would be overkill and probably be more of a nightmare for me and the rest of my colleagues here, regardless i don't think we will be able to get what we are looking for in a secure manner, looks like our manager in the field will have to split their time between the two locations... thanks again for the input

    Hello again.

Why don't you tell me exactly what you are trying to do so I can really help you. There may be a better and more efficient way of doing what you want.

we want to have store operation manager for 2 locations installed onto one pc that can remotely access either of the two databases at any given time.  We do not want to RDP or VNC into the systems because the store db is located on the POS and we do not want to interrupt the store associates if/when they are assisting customers. we simply want to access the 2 distinct databases through store operations manager remotely  ....  hopefully that makes a bit more sense...

First, you guys need to forget about Remote Desktop as it is not PCI compliant. Man in the Middle issues.

Second. VPN is slow.  For you guys VPNing HQ, stop it.  HQ encrypts all traffic anyway, why slow it even more.

Check out LogMeIn Pro as well as other remote control programs. They offer the option to connect to the computer in the background and will not disrupt the user in front of it.  https://secure.logmein.com/products/pro/features.aspx   With LogMeIn, install the Pro version on the database machine and the Free version on the rest or vice versa.  If you have a lot of machines to log into (we have over 1000), consider buying an annual license to LogMeIn Central (<$299) to manage them.

Lastly, you can use any computer in the store to run Manager, not just the machine with the database on it.
