Extra GP Windows after login - Citrix and Windows 7

Hi,

Most of our users connect to GP via Citrix. These days most of them are running WIndows 7. But some are still on XP. When our Windows 7 users login to GP, they get two additional minimized windows along with the Main GP window (see attached). These windows are titled '~internal~ - \\Remote' and they seem to cause no side-effects... other than being a bit of a nusiance when ALT+TABbing to other windows, etc. We can close them. But they come back eventually when doing normal activities in GP.

We only get these two extra windows on Windows 7 PCs. It doesn't happen with Windows XP. At first I thought it must be a goofy problem from our aging Citrix environment (Presentation Server 4.0 on Windows Server 2003). We've been living with it for a while now. But we're also testing for an upgrade from GP10 to GP2010, and using the latest Citrix XenApp environment for GP2010 (on Windows Server 2008R2). And the problem still exists on the new platform. The common denominator is Windows 7. Does anyone know what's causing this and/or what we can do about it?

Thanks,
Guy Pardoe

    Hi Guy,

We would need you first to rule out Citrix. Please install GP on a local machine and see if you still get the additional Windows. I cannot say I have ever seen this windows before. Also this could be a 3rd party window so you will want to remove those as a test and see if that resolves the issue.

This does not happen in GP on a local machine install. It only happens in the Citrix environment with Windows 7. Interestingly, the two extra windows have the GP icon. The only contents of the two extra windows are a minimal version of the GP Main Menu. FILE, EDIT, TOOLS, and HELP.

We had the same problem on GP 10.0 when combined with Citrix Presentation Server 5.0 and Windows 7.  I'm pretty sure this has been documented previously (although I'm having trouble finding it).  We are now on XenApp and GP 2010 and no longer have the issue.  What version of the OS of Citrix server?  We are on Server 2008 r2.

    Tim,

I'm glad to hear that someone else has seen this problem. Our new environment is XenApp6.5 on Windows Server 2008R2. I was hoping the newest platform(s) would eliminate the problem. But no luck (so far). Do you recall anything else about it?

I just noticed in the new [ XenApp 6.5 ]  environment that one of the windows contains something that looks connected to the menuing system or something. See below.  When I press the buttons on this form, I get certain GP windows. Is this a useful clue to where these windows are coming from?

Internal windows are often used by 3rd party products as this is code running behind the scenes. Again if this issue is not happening on a local install of GP with the same products installed you could be running into a Citrix issue. You guys would need to contact Citrix. If you can reproduce the issue locally on a machine then take out all 3rd party products and see if that resolves the issue.

    Guy,

I've been thinking about this and I wonder if the problem here is not Citrix but the underlying Terminal Services.  When we switched to GP 2010 and XenApp we created an entirely new Citrix Farm and we created an new TSProfiles store on that new farm (the other TS Profiles on the old farm were abandoned).  How is your new Citrix server connected?  Are your users still using "old" TSprofiles?  If so, for a test user, delete their User Profile from the Citrix box an delete their TSProfile and log into the new server (DO NOT Login to the old one (ever again)).  OR,  create a new test user and login to the new XenApp Server.  My logic here is that you are still seeing the "old" (pre XenApp and GP2010) behaviour, so I'm wondering if other "old" stuff is affecting your new environment.

    Hi-

That window is MFG Job Costing.  MFG Job Costing adds "right click" menus in many places in GP, which are used to right-click to add Job Costing links.  The ~internal~ name is a keyword for GP which causes GP to make the window accessible to all users, and invisible to Security.  We just had a customer upgrade to GP2013, who uses manufacturing, and Terminal Services, and they do not have this issue.  So my guess is there is something about Citrix that is causing these "hidden" windows to be visible.

@Tim, the new test environment is totally new equipment & software. It's even a new domain on a different network, in a different part of the country. So I'm pretty sure we don't have new versus old profile problems. Interestingly, the extra windows don't show up in on XP client PCs, only Windows 7.

@Brenner, that's useful to know (Job Costing). Every clue helps.

What version of the Online Plugin are the Windows 7 users running?  Here we are 12.0.0.6410.
