Wildcard Financial Dimensions in Reports

(5) ShareShare
ReportReport

We use parent and child projects in our financial dimension set up; child projects have the same base project ID as the parent project with a suffix on the end, like parent project ABC1234 and child project ABC1234-YZ

I'm designing a new report in Financial Reports and need to show data only relating to certain child projects. I've tried using +Project = [*-YZ ] but this isn't accepted by the designer.

I've also tried defining a Dimension Value Set in the same way and, while this is accepted by the designer, when I run the report I get all project data, not just the child.

Is there any way to pull through just the data for the child project on a row?

    Hi,

In Financial Reports (Report Designer), wildcard-based filtering such as *-YZ or similar pattern matching is not supported in Row Definitions. Because of this limitation, the designer does not correctly interpret such expressions.
As per Microsoft best practice, the correct approach is to avoid wildcard or suffix-based filters and instead use one of the following:
    • Create a Dimension Value Set with explicitly defined child project IDs (e.g., ABC1234-YZ, ABC1234-XX)
    • Assign this set to the row definition to ensure only required child projects are included

    Hope it will help.

The recommended approach is to create a Dimension Value Set with the exact child project IDs (e.g., ABC1234-YZ) and use that in the row definition/reporting tree.

For a long-term solution, it is better to create a separate financial dimension or attribute to identify child projects instead of relying on suffix naming conventions.

I advise you to use the reporting trees for this purpose to add the project values to the trees.
