User Logs in AX

I have been struggling to find where the user logs are located within AX. I have tried Inquiries - > User Log (always empty, and another forum messages stated to check LCS). I have tried in LCS and there are some logs, but no where near as much I would like. I don't even see the user name located anywhere. I need access to the user log as part of IT/Security support. Can anyone help with where these things are located?

Thanks,

Steve

What do you mean by "user logs"? What information are you trying to get?

Don't forget that there isn't any client anymore, just HTTP requests received from browsers, Excel, mobile apps and so on.

I would be interested in the user name, the time they logged in, source IP, etc. And actually their user activity when they are logged in. We also need to track time between logins as well. We typically feed all of this information into our Security Information and Event Manager (SIEM) tool.

What is "to log in"? When they authenticated in Azure Active Directory (which is completely outside of Dynamics)? When you received the first authenticated request in a certain timeframe? Or something else?

What is time between logins? If I send a new request after twenty minutes (e.g. I sync my mobile phone), is it a new "login" or is it a part of the previous "login"?

You seems to be thinking in terms of a desktop application, but now we're talking about a web application merely receiving HTTP requests and not handling authentication by itself at all.

I get that the Cloud brings a new way of looking at things, but tracking user behavior on web applications is not new. Within O365, Microsoft enabled API integration to provide application level user tracking, logging, and auditing. We also have SOX requirements

    www.sarbanes-oxley-101.com/sarbanes-oxley-audits.htm

to track the same. While we do use Azure AD for the authentication piece, we are not tracking any user behavior specifically through the AD logs. Again, with O365 I can tell when someone logs into the portal, which resources they are accessing (posting files, viewing SharePoint, etc). There is no specific "log off", I agree. We need to track (per regulatory requirements, again SOX) how long accounts are stale, meaning they haven't logged in in 30, 60, 90, days, etc. That is the time between logins.

All of this user telemetry data is viewable in every other Cloud application that we are using. AX seems to be the exception to this. Is there no way to track user activity within the application?

    Hi Steve G San Diego,

There is "Activity monitoring tool" for D365O where you can view users activity, please refer to Activity monitoring section of next wiki article ax.help.dynamics.com/.../monitoring-and-diagnostics-lifecycle-services-lcs

To know for how long an account isn't in use, the useful metric would be measuring the time since the last request. "Time between logins", however you define a login, doesn't give you what you ask for. If I used the system a month ago and a week ago, the time between my two activities is three weeks, but my account isn't in use for just a single week.

Steve, we have a similar requirement as yours - to pull AX 7 "user logs" / "activity data" in a SIEM tool.

I am curious what did you end up with? We are looking at Azure Application Insights to see if that will get us what we need.

    Thanks.

Unfortunately MS doesn't have a solution. If you are using Azure AD for SSO, there is a "Sign-in Activity" log which is promising, as it shows all the required information. However, if you are running multiple instances of AX (like we are) then it won't distinguish between the instances. This fails our internal audit requirements. If you run a single instance, then it would probably be good enough. The remaining issue is that this log does not have an automated export feature, so you would need to manually download 30 days of logs. And Azure only stores 30 days of data.

It's unfortunate that a financial system is lacking a very basic security feature.

Hello, sorry for not responding sooner. This unfortunately doesn't provide the level of detail that I need. The basic requirement is to ID when a user logs into the system. I can't find that data within the logs in LCS. Also, the system isn't very user friendly as you need to associate the user telemetry Id to the user ID. Which is a pain.

    Appreciate the link, though.

    Thanks!

    Which version?

For Ax 2012  the administrator can choose to enable client access log at the user level and the user actions (like form open, close) will be recorded in a new table called SysClientAccessLog.   This feature is compiled only for rich client and by default is turned off.

    see: blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../client-access-log-dynamics-ax-2012

see :  The control field to enable or disable this feature is added to UserInfo table  on AOT\System Documentation\Table.

For AD monitoring you can try ADAudit Plus  - there is a 30 day evaluation which then reverts to  reduced feature free version. www.manageengine.com/.../download-free.html
