Link Sales and Projects in BC

It seems strange that there is no direct link to create Projects from Sales in BC. After all, in many instances the only way to fulfill a customer request might be to create a project when there is some process involved to get a product ready for a client before it can be fulfilled.

Has anybody used any apps or developed customisations to create the interface and how they went about it.

Projects are meant to act as a replacement for the sales module in BC. You can take a project from a draft/quote stage to an active project and then the link to the sales module is when sales invoices are created from the planning lines.

Otherwise, they are completely separate modules. You could perform a customization to link the Business Central CRM module to Projects or even Sales Quotes to projects. I've done that for some clients in the past. Or you could explore app source and see if there is an app that meets your needs.

In standard Business Central, there isn't a direct Sales Order > Project creation function. The standard flow is generally the other way around: you create the Project and then generate sales invoices from billable Project Planning Lines. However, BC does support Assemble-to-Project, where an assembly order can be created from a project planning line, so that may cover scenarios where the customer requirement involves preparing/assembling an item before delivery. For a true Sales Order > Project integration, you would typically need an extension/customization to create the Project, tasks, and planning lines from the sales document.

You are correct that Business Central doesn't provide an out-of-the-box flow to create a Project directly from a Sales Order or Sales Quote; the standard integration mainly works in the opposite direction—create/manage the Project and its Project Planning Lines, then generate the Sales Invoice from the Project, or use Get Project Planning Lines from a Sales Invoice (Microsoft specifically notes this action isn't available on Sales Orders or Quotes). If your process starts with Sales and some orders require project execution before delivery, a relatively clean customization would be to add a Create Project action on the Sales Order/Quote that creates the Project, tasks, and optionally planning lines from the sales lines, stores the Project No. on the sales document for traceability, and then uses the standard Project invoicing functionality rather than developing a separate invoicing process; I would prefer this small customization over introducing an app unless you need broader project/CRM functionality.

If your Sales Process involves some light work at time of sale, use the Assemble-to-Order policy within Assembly Management. This allows you to define an Assembly BOM and allocate Resource Time to the process. You can modify the auto-created Assembly Order if the work required has some variations. The shipment of the Sales Order will full consume the BOM and Resource Time automatically, so there is very little additional work required. This avoids having to write a customization to the Projects module, which is used for much longer duration services/build processes.

Yes that's correct, there is no standard action from a Sales Order to a Project. The standard link goes the other way, Billable planning lines create the sales invoice.
Before building anything though I'd first confirm what the process between the sales order and delivery actually is. If it's manufacturing or assembly, BC already supports that from the sales order through Order Planning or Assemble-to-Order, so a Project could just duplicate it. Projects make more sense when you really need project budgeting, resource planning and WIP.
If a Project is required, then I'd build an action on the Sales Order that creates the Project for the Sell-to Customer, a task per sales line, the planning lines from those sales lines, and stores the Sales Order No. on the Project so you can navigate back.
One thing to settle early is billing. Decide if the sales order or the project invoices the customer, otherwise you bill twice.
