If support for Dynamics AX has ended, is hosted/cloud the only option?

I am looking to implement an accounting/ERP system for a new company and assessing different options. One of the least desirable options is to use hosted services.

I understand that Dynamics AX 2012 R3 was the last release of AX and is now no longer being supported. I could go ahead with it nevertheless but soon I anticipate the Dynamics 365 option will be the only one left once our license expires.

However would it still be worth starting a new implementation of Dynamics AX 2012 on site? How about if we never want to use hosted/cloud options - would we end up reaching a dead-end soon using Dynamic AX 2012?

    Hi volumeone,

The software will continue to function; even when there is no support anymore from Microsoft. There are only some risks involved:

    - New features and localization regulations will not be added by Microsoft. You have to do it yourself or find a partner which offers the solution.

    - The operating system and SQL server will also be outdated in the future. Possible leaks or bugs will then also not be fixed anymore.

Besides a Microsoft managed cloud solution, there is also an option to run Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations on-premise.

Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations can be installed on-premises as well; cloud isn't necessary (although not everything is supported on-premises).

Implementing AX 2012 and later upgrading to D365FO makes little sense to me if you can implement D365FO directly. The upgrade, user training etc. is expensive, therefore it's best to avoid it if possible.

There are many who have similar views /concerns, however Microsoft's road map is clearly the cloud.

Dynamics ax 2012 R3 is supported for another 2 years but is unlikely to get any more functionality update.

You will have to pay the much higher D365 license prices either way,  and for Ax2012 implementation downgrade the licences.

You can then install on premise, or host anywhere.

After the supported period is up there is no point in paying any more enhancement fees - but you should have a good partner support contract.

The risk is that you may not be able to  keep compatible with SQL,, Windows, .browsers etc when there are e.g critical security or performance, or new feature reasons.

The plus side is there is a lot of code and consulting experience available in Ax 2012 R3 relative to D365 and oyu r eno faced with the minimum 20 enterprise user minimum needed for the cloud . The downside is that you will progressively fall behind and will need to reimplement sometime, and will not have the benefit of the Dynamics technology cloud stack.

Dynamics 365 is also available on-premise, but at a worse cost- value balance than in  the cloud.

I have an MSDN subscription and can only see Dynamics AX 2012 R3 in my downloads - there is no Dynamics 365 at all.

Do you know how to get it under MSDN?

D365FO isn't available under MSDN subscription.
