Project based Production Orders with reference to WBS

Hi All,
In d365 F&O, currently we are using project management and accounting module with project group T&M or fixed price model without WIP configuration and WBS and budget controls. Based on given setup we are creating production orders within the PMA module by selecting BOM and routes.

The requirement has changed because of business requirement: now onwards we want to continue with same T&M or fixed price model and no WIP configuration. We do not want to create BOM and routes separately and these details will be captured in WBS in PMA module along with budget controls wherein we will mention bill of material (BOM) and the routes lines and tagged each line with required categories and later then based on the WBS activity we should be able to create production order through item requirement function. Is it possible or not? If yes, then what are the key setup/s or points to be considered?

Really appreciated in advance if someone could help us in this regard.

    Hi Asif,

It appears that the requirement cannot be met using standard functionality and would instead require customisation—potentially a complex one.

In Dynamics 365, a production order can only be created when a Bill of Materials (BOM) exists. From a process perspective, a Project WBS may indicate that a certain activity requires an item, and the organisation may choose to fulfil that requirement through the production process. In such cases, the project team raises the internal requirement, and the production team is responsible for creating the BOM and route accordingly, followed by creating and processing the production order.

Conceptually, the project team is not expected to be proficient in production-related configuration and/or processes. Allowing BOM and route management directly at the WBS level could expose critical production data to multiple teams, increasing the risk of errors and data inconsistencies. Therefore, production master data should remain controlled and accessible only to the production team, while project WBS data should remain secured and accessible only to the project team.

    Cheers,
    Burhan
