frx last year comparison

Posted on by 170

Hello all,

I'm trying to create a Current Year vs Prior Year Quarter-to-Date P&L.

I'm know I've created this report for another company, but for some reason (unknown to me), I'm failing.

The Current year columns (B, C, D, & H) are pulling the correct data, and calculating correctly.

The Prior year columns (E, F, G, & I) are pulling all periods, regardless of the period specified, effectively overriding the print controls.

If I try to run this as of 1/31/12, I will receive a full three months of data for 2011.

I suspect there is an obvious answer, but I can't see past my nose to see it.

Thanks in advance to all who take a look at this,

msoliman

    Marc,

    Cool - I didn't know that about B+C+D vs. B to D.

I am thinking your NP formulas are not working because all of 2011 is considered as being prior to your base period (of 1/31/12).  Quarters are tricky in FRx.  Unless someone can come up with a better solution you may need to have 4 reports that you choose from depending on what quarter you're in.  :-(

I wish your suspicions were correct, but it's the former.  I've been using the correct Print Control, but it continues to give me Periods after my specified Base.  So yes, I see Feb 2011 and Mar 2011, when I've spec'd a 1/31/12 Base Period.

Your template above works as shown, but my Controller is asking for a comparative Quarter to Date report, so the Base-1/YTD combo doesn't work after the first quarter.  I would use Effective Dates, but she would like to see all 4 quarters on the report.

I was using the "NP" control so that only the calculated quarterly columns would be visible.  It was my understanding that a straight calculation  +B+C+D would use "NP" columns, where as a B to D would not.

Again, thanks for the time you've invested in this, I'm at a complete loss so all help is appreciated.

    Marc

    Re: frx last year comparison

When you print your report using the date 1/31/2012 with my suggestion ("P<=B" in the Print Control), do you have columns for Feb 2011 and Mar 2011 actually printing?  Or is it just that the total (in column I) adds up Jan through March, not just Jan?  I suspect it is the latter.

If so, here is a screenshot of one of my column layouts set up like this that works correctly: [View:http://victoriayudin.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/frx.jpg]

Take a look at what I am doing in the totals columns (N and O) - the reason to do it this way and not simply add up the columns is that the definition of "NP" in FRx is that the data is calculated (and used in formulas), simply not shown on the results.  That's not what you want - you not only want to conditionally hide these columns, but also not use them in the totals if they are not shown.

    Thanks for the reply Victoria!

Apologies for the poor quality screencap, but the Print Control shows "NP, P<=B".

I've tried it with and without "NP", I've tried every combination of "P/B" listed, all without luck.

It seems like there is something fundamental here that I'm missing...

    Thanks again for your time.

I can't quite see the screenshot, but I think the issue may be in your Print Control row.  It looks like you have "NP, something" in there?

If so, change that to be "P<=B" for all of them (take the "NP" out) - I think that should accomplish what you want.

    Thanks for the reply Sue!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to make a difference in the results that I'm trying to achieve.

I've left it unchecked, and for the January example, it displays Jan 2012, Jan 2011, Feb 2011, and Mar 2011.

    I'm 99% certain I've done this before...

Go out to the Building Blocks in FRx and go to report options.  Then go to the Advanced tab.  Under Other Options is a check box for include amounts in future periods.  Uncheck this and from what I think you are saying is that you just want to see January 2011 and January 2012.

    Hope this helps, Sue

Please forgive the crude title, I thought it was asking me to search older posts, so I stuck with general search terms.

Otherwise, consider this a post-Leap day bump!
