Question about CRM Database Refresh

Hello,

We are on CRM 2016 on-premise. We have a production and a test CRM servers that we use for development. Sometimes we refresh test CRM database from the production one.

Just to confirm, when we refresh our test CRM database from production database, do we need to redeploy the test CRM organization? I know the answer would be yes, just triple checking.

Thanks,

-tri

    Hi

The following steps are normally followed to refresh test with prod data

    01. Backup the prod and also backup test just in case if you need that for some reason

    02. Restore prod with a different name - test2, testMay or whatever the convention you normally follow

    03. Import the restored prod Org (test2/testmay..) via Deployment manager

Once the above steps are completed, your new test is a copy of live.  If you have new changes or solutions that you want to test, you will have to deploy your latest solutions or patches to this newly created test environment.

Thank you for your reply Kokulan.

Just confirming there is no way we can skip step# 3 when refreshing the CRM database, correct?

    Thanks,

    Hi

No, you won't be able to skip step 3 if you want to fully copy the Prod to test.

If you just want to refresh data on particular entities, you could think about writing a script or doing the export/import or using SSIS tools or data migration utility.   These options only allow you to sync data not customization or permissions or other configurations

Since we normally want to have an exact copy of live (meaning data + customization + sec roles & permissions), doing step 3 is the only choice you have in my view

According to your question you are doing development in Test crm servers and you have another instance called prod.

Now my question is if you are doing Development in test servers and how do you move the changes from test to prod?

I am asking  because database restore will be  removed everything in case if you did any different customization in Test servers compare to prod.

So create separate  dedicated organization in your test environment for refresh production DB.

As Kokulan suggested take DB backup from production and follow below reference steps to create new organization in Test servers.
