GP 10 Letter Writing Assistant

Posted on by 75,730
I ran into a situation where somehow they have damaged their Letter Writing Assistant. Is there anyway to reinstall just that component? What has happened is the Word templates and the macros are out of sync. They had made modifications but did not make any backups so I have no idea where these were kept. There are no lines in the DEX.INI file to provide a clue to their location. Can anyone point me to where the files might be or how to find them?

    Hey Richard:

Was looking for something else and ran into a post from David Musgrave on Word Templates:  He is referring to GP2010 and says the following

So you might ask ... Where in the file system can I find the template documents to edit?

    The answer is nowhere.

The templates are not stored in the file system at all.  To provide a central repository for the templates so they can be accessed by any user from any workstation, they are actually stored in the DYNAMICS.dbo.syReportTemplates table on SQL Server. Note that this table is not defined in any Dexterity dictionary.

Below is a quick step by step guide to creating a modified template:

Part 1 - Creating a new template from the original

1.From the menus, select Reports >> Template Maintenance.

2.Click on the Report Name (where it says "Click here to select a report").

3.Click on the report is already in the list or select More Reports and navigate to the report you wish to modify.

4.Click New and select From Existing Template.

5.Select the Template from the list that is to be the starting point for the new template.

6.Enter the New Template's Name and click Create.

Thanks for the reply Susan. I have been trying to see if anyone else printed these letters. If they did, the templates and macros should be on those computers. My primary concern are the modified templates and macros. If they were not backed up, then they are gone and will need to be recreated. Being that this is GP 10 there is no data subfolder. Why there is no line in the dex.ini is a mystery.

Richard in my GP2010 they are showing a line in the DEX.ini

    Letters Directory=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Letters\

    Word Macro File=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Letters\WordIntegration.dot

Which shows that they are supposed to be in the Data\Letters files.  I know that this is in my Development Company In my Production company the dex.ini is showing that I moved them to the same place that I have my reports dictionary which is out on a shared drive.  But again the dex.ini is showing me where they are.

Don't know if you can just restore them from a clean install.

    Sue
