Trying to install Reporting Extension for CRM 2016 but SSRS instance is blank.

VM containing (SQL & CRM on same machine)

  • Windows Server 2016
  • SQL Server 2017 - Microsoft SQL Server 2017 (RTM-CU6) (KB4101464) - 14.0.3025.34 (X64)   Apr  9 2018 18:00:41   Copyright (C) 2017 Microsoft Corporation  Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows Server 2016 Standard 10.0 <X64> (Build 14393: ) (Hypervisor)
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server already installed on VM
  • Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services is running and I am able to browse the reporting URL
  • SQL, CRM and reporting are installed using same account 'administrator'. This is part of "PrivReportingGroup" as mentioned in https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699754.aspx#sql_server_reporting_services
  • SQL server has default instance only

Can you please help me how to fix the error below (SSRS instance name is empty). Can we install reporting extension on SQL server 2017 (should be OK as I was able to install CRM server)

RE: CRM reporting Extension - SSRS instance is blank

    Hi,

Did you manage to get this resolved in any other way?

I have exactly the same issue. A couple of months ago I installed a test CRM 2016 system with SQL 2016 and all worked fine. I have followed the exact same process, and tried an alternative approach - but both end with getting stuck at the SSRS Instance field!

Would appreciate if you have since discovered the issue.

I might try to 'update' CRM and SQL in the meantime, and try again in case there is a bug with CRM default 2016 version and SQL 2017 SSRS.

    Thanks

    Jason

SQL 2017 is not in the compatibility list for CRM 2016 - see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3124955/compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016

CRM 2106 only supports SQL 2012 through to 2016.

In practise, you could probably get CRM 2016 to work with SQL 2017 if you start with CRM components installed on SQL 2016, then upgrade SQL to 2017, but the main compatibility issues come in the setup of CRM, as you're finding

Thanks David. I discovered this last night after my post ... and raised a support ticket with Microsoft as the internal use products available currently with MS Action Pack had CRM 2015 & 2016 where, as you pointed out, are not supported on SQL 2017 ... but the version of MS SQL included with MSAP is only 2017!! So ... this pretty much stuffed us no in terms of upgrading to CRM 2016 with the MSAP entitlement!

    Thanks David.

    Hi Jason,

Please let us know what was the response from MS how can we resolve this issue.

Sorry for the delayed reply ... but no response from Microsoft officially. Since this is MS Action Pack entitlement vs CRM Support ... I just got the pointed finger. So, we needed to source a supported MS SQL version and use that! Very poor on Microsoft's part!!

Since version 9 was just released on-premise, and SQL Server 2017 is in fact in the compatibility list, and since the empty SSRS instance persists in version 9 with SQL 2017, I would think this issue is more widespread. I've been digging into this for a day now without any luck.

I've also encountered this issue and not been able to resolve it.  For reference, The environment is using SQL 2017 with SSRS 2016.  Any additional thoughts on how to overcome this?

RE: CRM reporting Extension - SSRS instance is blank

The only solution to this is ... do not use SQL 2017. It is unsupported.

Someone else pointed out that you might be able to get this working on SQL 2017 if you install and get everything working on say SQL 2014 first, and then upgrade 2014 to 2017. BUT ... as it (SQL 2017) is not listed as a supported CRM 2016 database platform, if there are future issues that crop up - you are on your own as MS will not support it!

So, only answer I have is ... use supported SQL edition.
