Can you tell me where to find this, as I do not see it in the install instructions-- what did I miss? Please pull the info on what ports need to be open to the app & SQL servers and forward it to me.

I sent hardware requirments for a new server to a customer and this is what they sent back-- where do I find this?

Thanks

I don’t have time to go through the docs.  Please pull the info on what ports need to be open to the app & SQL servers and forward it to me.

    Hi,

The only thing I ever do with ports is to open port 1433 so the workstations can talk to the SQL server. I can't credit the author of this, but below is what I have in my cheat sheet on how to assign a port number to SQL. It's written for SQL Server 2005, so the navigation is probably different, but I can still do it following these instructions.

If enabled, the default instance of the Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine listens on TCP port 1433. Named instances of the SQL Server Database Engine and SQL Server Mobile are configured for dynamic ports, which means they select an available port when the SQL Server service is started. When connecting to a named instance through a firewall, configure the Database Engine to listen on a specific port, so that the appropriate port can be opened in the firewall.

To assign a TCP/IP port number to the SQL Server Database Engine

    1.      In SQL Server Configuration Manager, in the console pane, expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration, expand Protocols for <instance name>, and then double-click TCP/IP.

    2.      In the TCP/IP Properties dialog box, on the IP Addresses tab, several IP addresses appear, in the format IP1, IP2, up to IPAll. One of these are for the IP address of the loopback adapter, 127.0.0.1. Additional IP addresses appear for each IP Address on the computer. Right-click each address, and then click Properties to identify the IP address that you wish to configure.

    3.      If the TCP Dynamic Ports dialog box contains 0, indicating the Database Engine is listening on dynamic ports, delete the 0.

    4.      In the IPn Properties area box, in the TCP Port box, type the port number you wish this IP address to listen on, and then click OK.

    5.      In the console pane, click SQL Server 2005 Services.

    6.      In the details pane, right-click SQL Server (<instance name>) and then click restart, to stop and restart SQL Server.

After you have configured SQL Server to listen on a specific port there are three ways to connect to a specific port with a client application:

    ·       Run the SQL Server Browser service on the server to connect to the Database Engine instance by name.

    ·       Create an alias on the client, specifying the port number.

    ·       Program the client to connect using a custom connection string.

    I hope this helps you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Not having the time to read through the documentation is a poor excuse for not following proper security procedures. The port that SQL uses is only a small of what needs to be done to properly safe guard their data. What is the bigger picture here? Is their GP server just part of a bigger domain, how many users, which modules any third party products, etc? What version of the OS and SQL, what are the backup procedures? Leslie, as always, is correct. The default port for SQL is 1433. That be changed using the SQL Configuration tool. Don't let them treat GP as just another application. It is so much more than that!

    Hopefully this will help.

As far as opening ports that is something best left to your IT staff. Moving applications off default ports is always a good start on keeping hackers out. Whatever you do must blend in with your entire network security scheme.
