Classic and UCI parallel support

Hi,

Require suggestions on a problem we are facing for a dynamics CRM project. We currently have dynamics CRM available in classic mode. We are planning to switch to UCI but in phased approach. We need to provide UCI access to only few users and based on user adaptability we will completely switch to UCI. Users can open CRM directly by using URL or through deeplinks from external system. In both options for certain set of users (may be through security roles) we want to force them use UCI app but others should not have any problem in accessing classic forms.

Any suggestions or recommendations for solving this? Thanks in advance

-Ravi

    Hello Ravi,

    You can try following approach:

    1. Create a custom role.

    2. Create your UCI app and limit access to the app only to role you created on the step 1. More information you can find here - docs.microsoft.com/.../manage-access-apps-security-roles

    3. Give that role only to limited set of users you mentioned.

    Done.

Thanks Andrew for reply. We thought of the approach. However problem is when user lands in CRM page from external system (through deeplinks) we have challenge deciding how to open classic or UCI app. If we just had users accessing CRM through URL directly the approach you suggested was enough. We are looking some identifier or flag which can switch the URL dynamically between classic and UCI

    Hi Ravi,

I don't think what you're trying to achieve is possible in a supported way.

In the latest Release Wave we've introduced a feature that opens a record URL with no appid in the context of the user's latest app, but I'm expecting this to work only if the "Unified Interface Only" mode is enabled.

Generally speaking you can do something like following:

Create an Html/JS webresource that will be a "redirector". It will accept entitytype/entityid as a parameter, check current user privileges (UCI or Classic) and navigate to proper application/interface. I don't see a lot of sense in it but it sounds like a possible solution for "Deep" links for you.

That's true Andrew, that approach would work but this can get a bit complex if you want the script to run on all pages (dashboards, views, forms). A lot of effort for a short transition period.

    Henry,

I believe you understood me in the wrong way. What I suggested is to create 1 html webresource that will be "entering" point for deep links and after this based on user's information this page will redirect user to record/view/dashboard and proper app.

I estimate this task in 5-6 hours of work and it would not require additional scripting.

Anyway it's up to topic starter use this approach or not but my suggestion addresses his needs with both types of UI.
