How does 'Allow multiple values' on product attribute form work?

In the Attribute form of AX 2012 there is a check box 'Allow multiple values'. Technet states that this enables you to assign multiple values to this attribute.

Enabling this on an attribute, there is no difference to be seen for that attribute on the Product attributes form opened from a released product. Hence, what does that check box mean in specific?

The same issue still exists in D365 F&O. This has not been answered yet. Can someone please give us an answer?
