Hi,

How does field mapping work? Does it only work on creation?

Let's say after a record was created, if I entered a value in to a lookup field can other fields automatically be populate if they were set up with field mapping only?

Thanks

James

Your question can't be answered before you provide more information.

First of all, tell us which D365 product you're using. (D365 consists of many applications, such as Finance and Operations, Sales or Business Central. You're asking in D365 general forum, therefore it's not clear which product you have in mind.)

Then give us some context. There may be many places where fields are mapped in some way for various purposes.

    Hey James!

I hope you're doing well. Here's a summary of how field mapping works in Dynamics 365 explaining all the key points

Field mapping in Dynamics 365 allows you to automatically copy data from one entity to another when creating new records, reducing redundant data entry and minimizing errors. To set up field mapping, navigate to the solution explorer, expand the desired entity, and select its relationships (1
or N:1). Choose a mappable relationship, edit it, and define the source and target fields for the mapping. Save and publish the changes. Field mapping is used to set default values at the time of record creation and does not synchronize changes made to the source data after the record is created. Automatically generating field mappings can save time, especially for custom entities, by suggesting mappings based on similar field names and data types. However, use caution with system entities to avoid losing important mappings.
