D365FO uses future inventory

Hi all,

How can it be avoided that D365FO does not have access to future inventory?
For example, April 20. 200 qty of item A is product receipt updated (there is no inventory of Item A beforehand).
Thereafter, an inventory journal line (project) is created with project date April 10. This as well consumes 100 qty of item A. The posting succeeds even though the inventory first would be available later?
I have the same question (0)

    Hi THEN,

With PO linked to a Project, as soon as Product Receipt is posted, the items are consumed by the project.
If you want to receive in inventory and issue it to the project from inventory, you have to avoid creating a PO linked to a project.  Look at having the items with a coverage code of 'Requirement' with a minimum of 0.  When there is a demand for that item (Project`s item journal should qualify), MRP would suggest to purchase the item to compensate for the demand.  The items received on that PO (not linked to project) would be in inventory until they are issued.

    Hi,

What you’re seeing is standard behavior in D365FO — by default, the system does not prevent backdated transactions that consume inventory posted at a later date.

D365SCM tracks inventory per physical date, not strictly enforcing chronological posting validation.

Unless you enable inventory closing or financial inventory checks, the system allows such out-of-sequence postings.

    • Consider reviewing Inventory value reports with date validations to monitor such issues.

    • Use inventory blocking or reservations to prevent accidental consumption before stock is physically available.

    • Apply stricter posting policies or custom validations if this poses audit or cost impact risks.

Unfortunately, there's no out-of-the-box hard stop to block backdated postings relative to receipt dates — so minor customization may be needed.

    Hope this helps,

    Warm Regards,

    Zain
