Why did my import fail?

When doing a lead import into CRM we have a scenario where many failed because they were duplicates.  Is there any way to tell which duplicate detection rule was the reason they were failing?  We are wanting to know which leads failed because there were duplicate leads in the system vs. duplicate contacts (comparing on email address).

    Dear Ben,

For checking the status of the import, go to Settings > Data Management > Imports, then double click on the source file (Lead.xml), and select failures for showing all failures records, then go to Source Row to find the failure reason.

    Hope this helps,

Where does it say the failure reason on the source row?  I know the reason is because it was a duplicate.  I am trying to find out what it was a duplicate of.

Ben that report should tell you what records were dups. You need to expand the 2nd col, you can also export the list.

Please note each record will be on one line. I think with a comma.

    Hope this helps.

I am not sure you are understanding my question.  I know how to find out which ones are dupes.  I am trying to find out "why" they were dupes (ex: Matching phone number, matching email address) and what they were duplicates of (contacts or leads).  Is there a way to find which Duplicate Detection rule made the record import fail?

    OK.

    You need to do this:

    Setting-->Data Management

Look For Duplicate Detection Rules and Click on the Icon

    A window will open

Look for the Base Record type ie Leads.

Click on that Rule Name. A window will open here you can change the rule.

    Hope this helps you Ben

PS this if for CRM 2015 not sure if the same Setting (where you can find duplication settings) will apply to 2013

I know where to find the rules.  I built the rules prior to the import.  I just need to know which rule was the reason a record did not import.  Ex:  "John Doe was not imported because his email address matches an existing contact."

    Dear Ben,

As far as I know, CRM does not have this this feature, you can export the failures records and find the duplication by using Excel, based on the Duplicate Detection Rules  that you have.

Other option ( its an Idea) , you can keep one of your Duplicate Detection Rules on Lead Entity published and unpublish the others, then import the data and export the failures records for the published Duplicate Detection Rule. then go to Settings > Data Management > Imports and delete all imported records from .zip file. repeat the steps for all Duplicate Detection Rules, then you will get all the failures records for each Duplicate Detection Rule.

    Hope this helps,

    Abed.

    Ben,

No..You cannot know which rules are being used for the data import because it just show you which row from Source that causing problem, but considering you have more than 5 rules, one by email, another by phone, another one by name, etc, you wont know until you compare yourself which row and which column causing it.

I am looking the same functionality also as you did.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hello Ben,

One way to know which duplicate detection rule is reason due to which the import is failing is by unpublishing lead and contact rule one by one and trying the import after unpublishing each rule. If the import is successful without the any error after unpublishing certain duplicate detection rule then that is the duplicate detection rule that was causing the failure.

Please conduct this test in your test environment before applying it in the production to avoid data manipulation.
