Assembly BOM for Service Items

Is it possible to create a BOM Item for service items? For example, a landscaping company bills a client for landscaping services and invoices them with a single Item called LANDSCAPING SERVICES.

That said, they want to be able to track multiple GL Codes and/or multiple dimensions against that invoice. For example, they want to track 40110 - Installation Services with a Dimension Code Line of Business (LOB) of INSTALLATION, and also a GL code of 40115 - Project Management and a Dimension Code (LOB) of ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT

They only want a single line to appear on the invoice to use for recurring invoicing (which I realize is NOT available - and a deal breaker for any service company with recurring billing) but still track details for multiple GL codes or multiple dimension codes.

The thought was to create a BOM for LANDSCAPING SERVICES with an assembly component item of DESIGN SERVICES and ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT to track the appropriate details, but it doesn't appear that Service items can be used as a BOM.

Is there any functionality in D365 Financials that would support this scenario?

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you for the questions. Your findings are correct, that it is not possible to create a BOM which consists of service item components.

For the scenario that you have described, it sounds like something that would be best fit by the Jobs functionality. Here you can create a Job. You assign Job Tasks to the Job, and then within each Job Task you can have one or more Job Planning Lines. When you define a Job Planning Line, you can choose whether it is a Budget (think of your costs and internal tracking) or Billable (appears on the Customer Invoice) type--or both.

You are able to copy Job Tasks (and associated Job Planning Lines) from one Job to another--for the case where this is a recurring type of service.

One downside is that at present, we are not able to work with Dimensions on the Job or any level of the Job. However, this is something that we expect to see remedied in the near future.

The Cronus company has some sample jobs set up which you can use to get familiar with the concepts.

    Hi Tammy,

Thanks for the confirmation.  Unfortunately, for reporting requirements, needing to track dimensions against the Job Tasks (or planning lines) would be necessary. That is why I was looking at Service Items as a BOM.  Regardless, when it is necessary to invoices 250+ customers monthly, copying job tasks for invoicing purposes on a monthly basis is a deal breaker.

I have to say, it is a little disappointed and very surprising that it is not possible to use Dimensions on Jobs, let alone have any kind of recurring functionality for jobs or Sales Invoices, at least from that I have seen.

Thanks again though, I appreciate the follow-up on the information.

I am wondering if 5 years later, there is now a solution for this situation?

I would like to bundle different service item together. For example : "Gold Package" which include several diagnostics services, versus the "Bronze package" that has less services included

I don't mind using non-inventory item for the bundle, but I would like to have the possibility to see the list of item included in the bundle on the invoice and have a price for the bundle.

I'm looking for a similar solution as well... I find it strange that there's nothing in this direction, especially when we talk about licenses or software products for which there's no physical inventory.

There's Subscription Billing for this kind of functionality and one can easily create a Bundle for several services. It seems flexible enough for a multitude of scenarios.

    See documentation: learn.microsoft.com/.../subscription-billing-summary
