"Complex" item hierarchy and characteristics

Summary

We have the notion of item categories/subcategories (product, sub-product, origin country, brand, ..) and complex variants (multiple "sell" dimensions associated to each item). I would like to know how to setup this in NAV.

We do add new items really often. Using only attributes it means that the enduser will have to enter 11 attributes. And the fact that there is no "hierarchy" results in potential input errors (pick a sub-product category that does not match it's category for instance).

Is it possible to have an item hierarchy in NAV ?

Are attributes the only way to define object categories and attributes ?

    You can create many Item Templates to create item.

    Inside Item template you can add categories, so picking Item template all needed item fields including attributes & categories will be filled automatically.

    Item Attributes are free flow there is no heirarchy but you can define Item Category with heirarchy and then define the item attributes for the item category code.

    Plesae check item category code on the Item.

    according to your requirement attributes are not enough but can be use to map one or two

    use item category code for your requirement , if its not enough

    gen product posting group/inventory posting group (but care full)

    or you can customize Item card by adding field by making new table and map it to Item card

    Are the item attributes are define hierarcheywise or is it just freeflowing for decsribing the item ?
