Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Runtime Edition

We recently placed an order for AX 2009 on SQL Server 2005 runtime edition. We have the AX media but are not sure how to obtain the exe for SQL runtime edition. Would the license be incompatible with say, SQL Personal edition?

Any help out there?

Regards

Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

at a minimum you would need Sql 05 Standard edition to run ax09. Sql 2000 personal edition is not supported

What i meant to ask is there are compatibility issues between SQL 2005 Runtime Edition and SQL 2005 Personal Edition. We needed to instal AX but had not obtained the SQL Runtime Edition media. I have since confirmed that you can install AX on SQL Personal Edition though AX licenses are on SQL Runtime.

    Hi Patrick,

Please check which edition of SQL server you ordered. The two options in Microsoft's price list for DAX are:

    - SQL Server 2005/2008 Standard Runtime Edition and

    - SQL Server 2005/2008 Enterprise Runtime Edition.

So in fact you are buying Standard or Enterprise edition. The Runtime licence is just a way to provide you with a set of different licence terms, not a different configuration of features. While the licence terms are hard to discuss in details, the main idea of Runtime is: you buy DAX (a Microsoft product) and you get a discount for buying SQL Server (another MS product) if you promise that you will use this instance of SQL Server for DAX only.

I have participated in an installation of a Runtime edition only once and as far as I can remember it we received a disk (or two disks?), installed the software and it didn't require a licence key as it was pre-defined in the software itself. So if you planned to install Personal edition and just "unlock" it with the Runtime licence key, I don't think it will work as you will not get a licence key. This is based on my recollections as of almost 2 years' ago so Microsoft might have changed their procedures.

On another note, I can't see a Personal edition of SQL Server on the Microsoft website. The first edition is called Express. Oracle does have a Personal edition though.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Please also talk to your partner and the responsible Microsoft employee.

    Best regards,

    George

I'm sorry, I just saw the title of your post - it says you have Enterprise Runtime Edition.
