Migration from AX 2012 R2 to Dynamics 365

Hi,

We are using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and we would like to Migrate to Dynamics 365.

I would like to know in this case whether we need to Migrate from R2 to R3 and then to 365 or is there are direct option to Migrate from R2 to 365.

We are using most of modules in AX with limited customization, what is the level of complexity in migrating from R2 to 365.

Regards,

Uday

    Hi Uday,

Recommend to perform an in-place upgrade from R2 to R3 and then leverage LCS and Visual Studio tools to migrate code and metadata from Dynamics AX 2012 R3 to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations.

Here is a link with more details:

    Hi Uday Bhasker,

Please refer to link provided by Rahul Mohta. It is possible to use code upgrade service for R2 model store as well, you may consider direct upgrade from R2 to Dynamics365 for Operations. However, please be aware that there is no data upgrade available, only code, so you will have to think about moving master data and balances only.

Code upgrade service will provide estimates for time you need to spend to upgrade your customizations and additional details, so you will get rough idea.

Thank you for your reply.  So, you mean to say that it is possible to upgrade the code from R2 to Dynamics 365 but not data migration, so in this case how can we do data migration from R2 to Dynamics 365.

Another point highlighted by you is, code upgrade services will provide estimate for standard features as well as any customization's done in application.

    Regards,

    Uday

Hi Rahul, Thank you for your reply.

I have an another questions, what if a customer is using AX 2009 and he wants to migrate to Dynamics 365? Do he need to upgrade first to AX 2012 R3 and then to Dynamics 365.

    Regards,

    Uday

    Hi Uday Bhasker,

Yes, you can do code from R2 to  Dynamics365, not data. There is no direct path from 2009 to Dynamics365, you need to upgrade code to 2012 because update service accepts only model store.

To migrate data you can use DMF framework, it has more than 1500 entities out of the box, so you can export all master data and balances from 2012 and import them to Dynamics365. This process is pretty similar to migration from another ERP system to AX when you have to extract data from old system, put it into templates and upload using DMF.

Please refer to wiki page regarding data entities ax.help.dynamics.com/.../data-entities-home-page

Hi, so even if we have done customization in AX 2012 R2, can they be upgraded as well.

Yes, of course. Code upgrade service is introduced to upgrade customization. Please read link provided to you before ax.help.dynamics.com/.../upg101-preparing-for-migration it explains whole process.
