Managing product attribute values for Commerce

Product attributes are heavily used in most retail implementations. With the ability to leverage product attributes as searchable for you ecommerce sites, the management of product attributes has become even more important in customer sales conversion and enabling the customer to find what it is they are looking for quickly and easily.

Within D365, the framework for creating attributes types, attribute groups, and attributes is established and works well. However, maintaining the attribute value can be a serious effort. Often times, we have to write logic to map data fields to specific attributes values within D365 or perform the mapping exercise within an item integration to establish the attribute values on import/update. These can prove to be costly over time.

What are other customers and business partners doing to assist with their product attribute management and is there a way to map the product's attribute value to a data field within the ERP using base configuration?

Same. There is not standard functionality to map the product's attribute value to a standard data field.

I would suggest keeping the attributes in sync using tooling outside of D365. Azure function or similar can be used to keep these things in sync (fields by use of the data lake (read) and DMF (update). Run the function on a schedule. If you ever need to change things, its easier to do.
