Extender Windows - Adding to Security Tasks (GP 10.0)

I am having a little issue with Extender security.  We have our security set up as  1 Role to 1 Task (I wish it was not set up this way but it is) and all of the Tasks and Roles are custom, meaning all of the standard out of the box ones are gone.

When I want to add an extender window to a Security Task, it gives me the option of creating a new task or adding to an existing task.  Adding to a new task will not work for me since I need to assign it to many existing tasks (remember the 1 to 1 task to role).  But when I choose to add to an existing task, only two tasks show up to add it to (out of about 40 that we have).  1 of them was a GP analytical accounting task that was left over from the install and the other was an unused task for another extender window someone had made previously.  Where are all my tasks?

I ended up just creating a new task just to see the security operations involved so I could manually add the operation to the proper tasks, but when I open my new task and print the report that show all the operations for that task, it is empty.  But it does in fact grant access to that Extender window, which is strange.

I was expecting it to be like adding a Smartlist Builder Report.  When I create a new one, it just shows up as a new operation in security under Smartlist Objects.

Does anyone have a solution?

Well it seems you have missed the entire concept of roles where a role defines one person's or one group of people's work load and the single role assigns a group of tasks (each containing a group of windows, etc) to the user(s).

You can assign the Extender window to it's own role and assign that role to each user that needs it.  After all, you must have several roles for each user now.  Or does the single task contain multiple objects?  You could take the task associated with the Extender role and put those objects in the current tasks.

I would suggest you re-build your security to make life easier.  You can check out our book -- The Dynamics GP Security Handbook for assistance.

I didn't design the security model and it is for a very large public company under strict SOX controls and there is no way they would even consider redesigning the Security at this point.  They recently upgraded to GP 10 from GP 8 and wanted to keep it as similar as possible for the auditors (I was not here for that and security is much different in 8 and 10).  Essentially there are Roles (Example: AR MANAGER) that has only 1 Task Assigned to it (in this case AR MANAGER)  and that task is full of all of the operations that the AR MANAGER needs to do their duties in Great Plains.  But yes, it does make life a little difficult.

The problem with the solution that you offered is that we do not assign more than 1 Role to a user (I wish we did).  So let's say that AR MANAGER needed this extender window.  I would assign it to the security task "AR MANAGER" which is inherited by the role "AR MANAGER"  The problem is, when I create the security task for "MY NEW EXTENDER WINDOW" I pull up that task and print the report from the task that tells me "these are all the operations within this task,"  It comes out blank.  I would love to see it come out with 1 operation:

    Type: Window

    Series: Purchasing,

    Dictionary: Extender

Security Operation: The name of the extender window I created

But again, the Security Task Setup Report is empty

Ok, this was much more simple that I thought.  All I needed to do was go into any security task and click the "Additional" menu item, select Extender, and check the boxes of the Extender windows I needed.  So it is not the way you would typically assign Security Operations, like "Dynamics GP, Windows, Purchasing, Purchase Order Entry", or "Smartlist, Smartlist Object, Smartlist Object, Receivings Line Items."  Hopefully this will help someone save the hours I wasted scouring the tables.
