SQL Server filegroups and CRM

I'm not an expert in admin of SQL Server (pretty good as a developer).  I have a customer that wants to use different filegroups for their data files with their CRM database.  Is that possible?  Does CRM give you the option to select a filegroup during the install?

Related: can I pre-create the CRM databases (empty, no schema, nothing other than the shell) prior to the install and tell CRM to use those databases?

I'm going to investigate both but I thought someone might have the quick & easy answer.

Thanks,

Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

CRM does not give you an option related to data files or file groups when it installs.  However, it is just a plain vanilla sql server database.  So after crm is loaded and running you could move the data files around or create two log files, etc.

As for pre-creating the crm databases - I do not believe it is an option, but am not 100% sure.

Thanks for the quick reply, Alex.  I suspected the first and I verified the second - you can NOT pre-create the database.  If you do, you get the following errors during the verification process:

    • The following databases already exist on the specified SQL Server: MSCRM_CONFIG
    • The following databases already exist on the specified SQL Server: <CompanyName>_MSCRM

We told the customer that it will create it's databases wherever SQL Server is set up to put the data and log files and that they will have to do as you suggested by creating the filegroups, etc. after the install.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff
