Business Rule Unsaved Changes - Does Not Equal vs Does Not Contain

(0) ShareShare

We created a business rule with field2 (user lookup) based on field1 (type of custom entity record). The business rule (simple: if field1=value1.1, then field2=value2.1, etc.) triggering this was causing the form to always say "unsaved changes" immediately after saving.

I got sick of seeing this. No users complained, but it was bugging me.

I started by creating an "and" in the business rule condition. "Does not equal" would check if an existing value, not including null, does not equal a defined value. On the other hand, "does not contain" checks if an existing value, including null, does not equal a defined value, which is what we needed.

Might save someone some time sometime.

If (Field1 Equals Value1.1) AND (Field2 Does Not Contain Value2.1) Then Set Field (Field2 Value Value2.1).

Else if (Field1 Equals Value1.2) AND (Field2 Does Not Contain Value2.2) Then Set Field (Field2 Value Value2.2).

    ...

Else if (Field1 Equals Value1.n) AND (Field2 Does Not Contain Value2.n) Then Set Field (Field2 Value Value2.n).

    Hope this helps,

The problem with this is that we are hard coding the value of Field2, which is a user lookup, into the Business Rule. This means if there is an update to the user's name, the business rule will no longer work as expected. Additionally, if the user is ever going to leave the organization, you must update the business rule as well as export the Advanced Find with the user's name as the Field2, replace it with the new user's name, and import to update the records.
