how to validate an email account already exists with another user ?

how i can validate a email is associated with another user ? i remember in web applications it is done often using ajax. please guide me what are different approaches available and which one is best. kindly share links of sample if they are available.

    You can do it using duplicate detection rules. Check below link

    I need to do it from code. Any suggestions please. I m aware of duplicate detection but what other ways can be ? A plugin ? Can I do Ajax ?

    You can do both, it depends upon what type of result you are expecting. Throwing and exception using plugin in case duplicate is detected will show the business process error with your message. However, you can control the error message using JavaScript.
