How to add leading 0 "zero" into zip codes missing it

It has come to my attention that several hundred of our leads in CRM are missing the leading zero in their zip code field.

Does anyone have a workflow they have created that will look through leads for any with a 4 digit zip and add a zero to the front of the number?  Can you do this with a workflow or by another way?

Thank you!

    Hi Kit,

Do you mean some Zip codes have leading zeroes have this while others don't?

    Hi Kirk

If you're not happy with writing a custom workflow activity to do this you could look into using North 52.   North 52 will allow you to run against 250+ plus records and the Excel-type formulae will allow you to determine if the ZIP is 4 digits and prefix it with a 0.  You could also use the same formula to add the 0 on create of the lead if the zero is missing.

You get five free formulas with North 52 before you have to pay (although you cannot use them on custom entities).

Deepesh,  Yes our leads should have a 5 digit zip code in each of their address fields.  But several hundred do not.  I believe it happened during our migration to CRM Online last year and many with the leading zero were just truncated.

For these records that only have a 4 digit number in their zip code field, is it possible to write a workflow that I could run on all leads and add in the leading zero?

It may just be easier to create a view with the offending Zips and export them to excel, then do a fill down in excel to fix it and import it back in.

This would likely take less time than going the Workflow route that would only really be used once.  Just a thought.

BJMcmullan, thanks.  I thought about that but I am not sure what logic to use in my advanced find if I am only looking for leads with a 4 digit zip.  They don't give you a lot of options for your constraints.

    Any thoughts?

So my recommendation to pull this off would be to install the Gap Solutions Workflow Essentials tools (www.gapconsulting.co.uk/.../workflow-essentials) then create a background workflow that uses the String Tool - Length function to check the length of the Zip code field.  If length = 4.  At this point, you can do one of two things, either you can just append the values with the leading zero and be done with it.  Or you can set a marker and use advanced find to pull those accounts with the marker set and update them in Excel.
