Restrict Customization to Specific Legal Entity & Best Approach to Copy Data to New Entity

Hi Experts,

We are currently in the process of implementing a new legal entity in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.For data setup, we are planning to use the Copy into Legal Entity functionality available in Data Management (DMF). However, we have a concern regarding an existing customization in one of our entities.

The customization is currently applied at a broader level, and we would like to understand:

Is it possible to restrict a customization to a specific legal entity only?
If yes, what would be the recommended approach to achieve this?
If not, how can we prevent the customization from impacting the new legal entity?
Additionally, is Copy into Legal Entity (DMF) the best approach for this scenario, or would you recommend any alternative method for copying setup/data between legal entities?

We want to ensure a clean setup for the new entity without unintended impact from existing customizations.

Any guidance or best practice would be highly appreciated.

There is just a single codebase. A legal entity is just data in database. Therefore you can't have a customization in a single legal entity only, but you can have a customization that behaves differently when depending on input data (e.g. whether a parameter is set in a target legal entity).

Regarding the first question: if you mean you want forms / reports to be appear in specific legal entity, you can restrict security roles access to specific legal entities as in the following link: https://alexdmeyer.com/2020/01/07/options-for-configuring-user-legal-entity-restrictions-in-d365fo/

If not, how can we prevent the customization from impacting the new legal entity?

Additionally, is Copy into Legal Entity (DMF) the best approach for this scenario, or would you recommend any alternative method for copying setup/data between legal entities - Copy into legal entity is the correct approach for the data migration.
