We are attempting to create a backup before closing our modules. When we attempt this under the 'Maintenance' tab, we receive the message "You must be on the server machine to perform this task." Since our database resides on a separate SQL server, our IT consultant has created a backup of the entire GP database directly on the SQL server. My question is, is this really the same thing? It sounds as though it would be but I would like to confirm if other users with a similar environment create backups this way.

Susan is correct. First the message you saw when attempting to backup the database within Dynamics GP is because you weren't in a GP install that was on the SQL server itself, which is required.
Making a backup of the databases within SQL Server Mgmt Studio is the same thing that Dynamics GP is doing when you run it from Maintenance > Backup within the application.
Thanks
That is the normal way that you would do that. Your IT consultant did what is called a Hard back up to a drive and if you had to go backwards you could recover that data. He would have put the system database (used to be called DYANMICS) and all company databases out on the hard drive.
This is the normal.
