Unique Manufacturer No. (not Vendor No.)?

(0) ShareShare

Hello everyone,

is there a designated way to specify a manufacturer number for an item? As in, the unambiguous identifier by which the manufacturer (not vendor(s)) lists this one item?

We are struggeling somewhat with this issue. The Intercompany No., No. 2 and GTIN are all kind of close, but intended for different scenarios that we also need.

We have also tested item references for this intent. However, they seem to be limited to Vendor, Customer and Bar Code references, don’t provide a “Manufacturer” option, and allow for multiple values. We need those as well, obviously, but we would like to specify and search for the unambiguous Item no. by which the manufacturer lists one article.

Previous topics have suggested item references, so that one item can refer to different manufacturers. This is one issue that we absolutely want to avoid. Different vendors, of course, but only one unique Manufacturer and Manufacturer Item No. per Item.

Is there a native way to add this information without misappropriating other fields or functions?

Thanks a lot!

Have you considered using item attributes for this request?

Hi, thanks for your suggestion, in fact we have considere this. However, there does not seem to be an easy way to find items with a (partial) match thorugh the search field, but rather through filtering attributes for certain values. Also, we would have to add each mafucturer number (of which there will be many thousands) to the attribute options.

As a simple made-up example, I would like to add a pneumatic cylinder to one of our products. The cylinder is manufactured by FESTO, designate AEN-S-10-5-I, and listed as 4891759 in the FESTO catalogue.

The part is given an item number through our CAD PDM (lets say No. 1001). So there are two unambiguous identifiers for this part: The BC Item No. 1001 and the external Item no. 4891759.

Different vendors list this item under their individual Vendor No. (OT-FESTO079051 at Landefeld, 203-9923 at RS Components, 302-64-000 at Distrelec and so on). Those I understand are vendor references. However, there does not seem to be an option to specify one unique "external article no." through references?

If I would like to add this item to a BOM or simply check if this item exists before accidentally adding a duplicate, I would like to simply find it through the simple item search field (just like searching for the description, our article no. 1001 or search tags). Adding this as an attribute does not seem to provide this functionality. Searching for "1759" for example does not yield this item, despite being a partial match with the aforementioned external item no. 4891759.

Yes i think i understand your challenge.

What about using Item "No 2" There is an extra 20 char long field on the item table.

The field will not be visible in every page where the item list is displayed but that can be fixed through customization.

That will at least give you and easy way to search for the number.

This is very close to a solution, but "No 2" appears to be a Code 20 field, as you mentioned, and we already have various manufacturer numbers beyond 30 characters.

Also, the "No 2" is envisaged to be used for our own legacy Item No. from previous ERP migrations. This could be discussed, of course, but some kind of legacy traceability will be required either way.

If you require the field to be longer then 20 characters then i guess you need to look in to doing some kind of customization or check on AppSource if there are any add-on that provides you with the functionality you need.

If you know that your manufaturer no. only will consist of integers you could look into using the "Statistics group" or "Commission group" fields but they can only support the integer data type.

Hi Mr. Bruvik, thank you for your support. I was kind of hoping for a native solution that we simply have not figured out, but I appreciate your suggestions nonetheless. I will look into customization options or add-ons.

Hi, If each item you put into storage has a different manufacturer number, or a batch of the same manufacturer number, you should use the Serial No. function, which is a standard function.

Hi everyone, thank you all for your suggestions, I really appreciate your contributions. None really fully solve our issue, so it seems we will need a basic level of customization. But at least this reinforces my assumption that we did not simply miss the relevant feature or field.

Also, your suggestions might turn out to be much more helpful for others with slightly different requirements searching this board, so thanks again for the explanations!

    Best Regards

    Carsten

Why not use the Search Description field?
