Analysis by Dimensions discrepancy

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi

Has anyone encountered a problem with GL analysis by dimensions? (NAV 2009 RTC SP1). I have run an analysis by dimensions report, and when I click 'show matrix', I get a total that does not tie in with the total posted to the GL. When I View - Analysis View entries, I get a total showing in one of the dimensions, which when I highlight and click it gives me the detail behind the total. However, when I check the total of this detail, it does not add up to the total shown on the View - Analysis View entries screen. I have isolated the difference to one particular invoice, but nothing appears wrong with this - it has the correct dimension attached. How can a total clicked on an analysis view entry screen not tie up with the detail you get behind it when you hover and click on that total. Is this a system bug?

Many thanks

John

    Hi John,

I just took a look into the code... as it seems, you only get an inceremental update of the analysis view... So, when you change a dimension anywhere in a G/L entry (and assuming this change gets propagated to the Dimension Ledger Entry), you still won't get an update of the analysis view. This is pretty puzzling IMO. To force the update (caution: this can take a long time) you would need to delete the analysis view entries, set the last entry no of the analysis view to zero and update it. The easiest way to do this is to change the starting date of the analysis view twice. I would recommend to disable the "Update on posting" flag before. A more comfortable way would be to have an option to completely rebuild the analysis view entries.

Is this a bug in NAV? In terms of usability, yes.

    with best regards

    RE: Analysis by Dimensions discrepancy

    Hi Jens

Unfortunately this is not the case. Firstly, not only do we have automatic updating of analysis views switched on for each posting, I also click update every time I run the report, as a double check. I have checked the dimensions of all transactions in the report and they are all correct. Posting without dimension is also not allowed in the GL account. No-one apart from myself has the ability to change dimensions other than myself. This still also doesn't answer the question why the analysis behind the subtotals in the report doesn't add back to the subtotal itself in any event

    Thanks for your help

    RE: Analysis by Dimensions discrepancy

    Hi John,

there are several ways to update the analysis view, depending on the setup and on performance considerations. One is not to update the analysis view on every posting. This can be set up in the analysis view card. I would guess that this is the most probable cause for a difference. The remedy is to start "Update Analysis views" by hand before you do the analysis.

There are other possible issues: Often there is a customization to edit dimensions in posted ledger entries. This can also be a cause for deviating analysis views. The analysis by dimensions functionality itself is quite stable.

    with best regards
