VS Tools SDK compatible with previous GP versions?

Hello, can you tell me if I were to install the VS Tools SDK for GP 2013, is it backwards compatible - can I build add-ins for GP 2010 and GP 10.0? Or, must I specifically install the SDK for each version of GP I wish to build for?

Thank you very much for your time.

RE: VS Tools SDK compatible with previous GP versions?

Forgive me if this is long-winded. I grabbed the project from source control and on my system I did not have VS 2005 nor any indication 2005 would be proper. So I opened the project and went through the steps of upgrading it for VS 2010. Then I had to remove and re-add references, and I did so to the GP 10.0 DLLs, as the project in source control did not include those files. If I understand your statement correctly then, in conjunction with that activity, I believe I understand why the project continues to work in GP 10.0.

However, that brings up a thought experiment. Let's say a person wishes to build an Add-in for GP 10.0. He has VS 2012 and has installed the VS Tools for GP SDK for GP 2013. Would a person be able to create a new project, remove the references that were defaulted, and add references to the GP 10.0 DLLs and successfully build the Add-in?

Does this machine have the older VS components? To upgrade a VS application you start by upgrading the references. If you did not do that and you build again, it will build with the old references and continue to work. It is not the version of VS that makes a difference it is the VS Toolkit hence the references.

So allow me to ask a follow-up. I was attempting to create a new project and then add in resources from a second project that someone else developed so I have a new copy to begin modifying for a new client. I ran into problems adding some of the components to the new project. When I stepped back and re-examined what I had in front of me, I realized the existing project had been upgraded to VS 2010. I can build that project in 2010 in an environment where the GP SDK for 2013 was installed and successfully use the add-in in GP 10.0. Why does that work? Is it just important that the original project was developed with VS 2005 and the GP 10.0 SDK?

I know how MS loves to change things. No one should be using GP 10 anyway. I know there are plenty out that still do. So that is why I never delete anything.

Thanks Richard for correcting me. I was under impression that its released with GP 2010.

There is a Visual Studio Toolkit for GP 10. I have used VS Professional 2008 to build many C# applications for GP 10. The is also a VS Toolkit for GP 9.

Just to let you know, VS Tools SDK is available from GP 2010 and you cannot build add-ins for GP 10.0.

As Richard said, you need to match the SDK to each version of Dynamics GP. We can get the SDK from tools folder under the each version of GP installation media.

    Hope this helps!!!

You must match the SDK to the version of GP. With GP 2013 you will find the SDK along with the install media. With older versions you download them off CustomerSource.
