CAD Data at various levels of manufacturing

We are currently using Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 R@ Version US 4.00 SP3. I am trying to switch over to a 3D modeling environment and have been told that a couple things need to happen as far as how these models are created. These suggestions have come from other departments; Purchasing, Manufacturing etc… I have been told that an internal route cannot be assigned to a purchased item and on the other hand vendor resource cannot be assigned to a “make” part. They want me to assign a new number at these various steps in which I will go into detail on.

I have a part that is a rectangular plate that is bought from a vendor and is burned per our drawing. This plate is then shipped to a machine shop and some holes and surfacing is added to the part again per our drawing. The part is then shipped to us and can either be complete or we may add something to it here in our shop.

That’s the flow of one of our common parts and according to what I have been told needs a part number to order the plate by, another number to have the machine work done by, and if we do anything to it yet another number assigned to it.

In AutoCAD this was accomplished by adding a subline to our truncated bill structure to satisfy this. We just completed one drawing of the finished part and all info was pulled from that. Our 3D software is Autodesk Inventor and wants to have a single part to a single drawing with its own unique BOM. In order for this to satisfy the “other” departments we would need to create and manage multiple files with different numbers. This could get very confusing on revisions.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason Mayes

    hi,

for internal use you have your own unique item no. if there are routing operations done by external companies an additional number on the item card, which reflects the number used by your external partner, would be helpful. in the routing of the item you can define internal and also external operations.
