Store Commerce app and Windows 10 LTSC

Posted on by 5

Question regarding Windows (Enterprise) LTSC versions and Store Commerce

TLDR; Is Windows 10 LTSC viable for Store Commerce, or should we attempt to find POS systems which can run regular Windows and use policies to lock it down for enterprise scale use?

POS systems tends to be delivered with OS images based on Windows 10 LTSC (Enterprise/long term support) versions (so that one does not have to update 100+ stores so frequently). The latest version of Windows 10 LTSC (version 2021/21H2) supports Microsoft Edge browser 'out of the box' (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/ltsc/whats-new-windows-10-2021#microsoft-edge). Previous versions of LTSC did not (but you can actually install it - however it is frowned upon).

My questions are:

A) Does Store Commerce officially supports Windows 10 LTSC version 2021/212H?

B) This version of Windows has a 5 year life cycle. (next version is expected in 2024). But will Store Commerce (which are updated much more frequently) be able to run on this specific version of Windows for such a time frame?

C) Is there any kind of 'long term support' for a Store Commerce, ie.: will an 'old' Store Commerce be able to communicate with a much newer version of D365 FO which are updated every month?

    Hi Shafeeque

    Thank you for your response.

I agree with 1) because a Windows _11_ LTSC version will most likely support Edge out-of-the-box (as the newest version of Windows 10 LTSC does). The problem is as you describe in 2); For how long will the Store Commerce app be supported on a given version of Windows LTSC (which have low-frequency/no windows updates - the purpose of LTSC versions)?

I fear that there might be a slight oversight in the documentation regarding this, and that Store Commerce app is designed to run on continually newer versions of Windows (i.e..: non LTSC versions). And if that is the case, LTSC versions of Windows might not be supported after all.

I will wait a couple of days to see if there are more answers and then reach out to Microsoft Support. I will update this post with the response.

    Best Regards

RE: Store Commerce app and Windows 10 LTSC

    1. The system requirements page for Store Commerce app is little confusing. They have mentioned "Windows 10 version 17763.0 or later, Windows 11 (Pro, Enterprise, LTSC, and IOT Enterprise editions), or Windows Server 2019" which doesn't clearly say which all editions of Win 10 are supported.

    2. When MPOS was initially released it supported Windows 10 1607. Somewhere down the line they restricted the minimum version to 1803. Lets hope this will not happen with Commerce App and LTSC considering the low update frequency.

    3. There is no documented "Long Term Support". But documentation says it should work as long as you are running  same or lower version than CSU. The below article is outdated with no reference to Commerce App, but should give some idea.
