Connect Microsoft Dynamics Portals On-Premise to IFD facing CRM

I have currently the open source version of Microsoft Dynamics Portals 8.3 and I have a requirement to connect it with an IFD facing CRM. I know that in old versions of adxportals you could connect but using the connectionString. Is it still possible to use the connectionString, because from what I see from web.config is not commented as an option?

I believe any type of deployment is supported - OnPrem/IFD/Online.
