Analysis Services SQL Server connection failed. Please enter a valid SQL 2008 Server name.

Hi,

I am receiving the above error message when installing Analysis Cubes.

SQL 2008 R2

GP 2010 R2

I am installing from a 32 bit client which has GP 2010 R2 loaded and can access the database.

I have checked the ODBC and it can see the databases.

When I begin the install it asks for the SQL Servername which I provide (not including the instance).

This allows me to proceed to the next screen where I input the SQL Servername and instance name but I then receive the above message.

Can somebody please advise me how to install Analysis Cubes?

Regards,

Geoff James

    Hello,

Do you have SQL 2008 R2 Workstation Tools and Components installed on the client machine from which you are attempting to run the installation?

Also, do you happen to have an older version of SQL 2005 installed on that same machine?  I have run into issues before with having older versions of SQL on the installation machine.

    Hi David,

I had installed the tools and components onto the workstation from which I was installing.

I did have an older version of SQL2005 on the first worksation and could not fully uninstall it. I moved to a second workstation and installed the tools and components on it as it had never had SQL 2005.

It still had the same error

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Regards,

OK, I would also suggest that you confirm your security requirements for the account under which you are performing the install.  Since you are able to proceed to the second screen on the installer, I would recommend checking your account's permissions on the GP server.  If you refer to the Analysis Cubes Installation documentation, you'll see a set of permissions required for your Windows user on the GP server (local Administrator on the GP machine).

What I suspect is happening is that you do not have read permissions on the DYNAMICS database.

    Hi David,

You were correct regarding the account which I was using to login.

I have now been able to successfully deploy the cubes using a login that had full administrator rights.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Regards,
