Work list webpart editing

We're using EP for one of our clients. As some of their employees never log in to AX itself, they use the work list quite extensively to manage workflow requests. My issue is as follows:

They often return journals for changes. I need a way to show the approver which of the journals on his/her work list has been resubmitted after changes. Is it possible to edit the information displayed in the work list webpart itself? Or is there any other way to notify them that the workflow approval request is the result of an item being returned for changes?

I've considered using e-mail notification to do this, but they aren't keen to enable those notifications for AP and AR workflows due to the volume of requests.

Any ideas?
