Is SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) really required for Dynamics 365?

On-Prem, upgrading from 8.2 to the latest 9x version.

We have never used the SQL Reporting Extensions and have disabled all reporting.

We're told we need to install SSRS though somewhere in order to Import the Organization since we are not doing an in-place upgrade (we can't, due to changes in system requirements).

Is this true or is there any other way of bringing over your organization without it?

My DBA wants me to find 12K just to install SSRS somewhere to use, just for this install.

I have the same question (0)

    Hi,

    Bad news,

Unfortunately there is no supported way around this that I know of.  You need SSRS & more over the "CRM Reporting Extensions" to import a CRM Organization.
Once the Organization is imported you can remove the "CRM Reporting extensions" and uninstall SSRS.
Once you have removed the reporting extensions and uninstalled SSRS you will no longer be able to import an org.

    **BUT**
If you don't want to shell out for an additional SQL license:
You can install SSRS temporarily on the same server as the existing SQL server that CRM uses, this way you will not have to purchase a new SQL license, if this is OK with your DBA.
For larger deployments it is best practice to install SSRS on a separate server to your CRM SQL server.
If you choose to go this route, make sure you read the requirements for CRM to use SSRS (it needs to be a domain user service account running SSRS).

Here is the Microsoft doc showing the CRM reporting extensions are required to create a new Organization or Import one.

    Hello there,

this is the list of pre-requisites:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../software-requirements-for-microsoft-dynamics-365-server

You will see that you need the SSRS services running.
