Running MRP Regeneration during the day

We have been running Net Change regeneration during the day due to the constant change in our demand stream. Recently we have been having problems where Manufacturing Orders are showing as allocated when they have already been issued, driving double demand. We were told it is not common practice to regenerate MRP during the working day. Is this accurate? I am getting conflicting information.

Thanks in advance.

MRP has two operation ways: the way to input only the difference between the previous plan and the current one, and another way to input all data of production plan every time. The former is called Net Change, while the latter is called Regeneration DGCustomer First Survey

    Hi,

it is generally not recommended to run the MRP generation during the day while users are working in GP, as 1) it uses a lot of resources from the system and will slow down the user's experience quite a bit, 2) it is going to change a lot of values in different places, that you do not want users potentially working on at the same time.

Many years back, a company I was working for started newly with the GP MfG module and they used to generate every day the MRP data during lunch time, asking users to quit GP before noon and not log back in before 1pm.. However, not only was this very dangerous, as there was no way to prevent really users from login into GP while the process was running, but with the time it increased the size of the data and required more and more time to run the whole process.. What took only about 30 min at the beginning, was going way over 1hr after a few months, thus it was no longer bearable to run over lunch time.

We found a way to run the MRP generation un-attended during the night time when nobody was in GP, though the plant was running 3x8hrs shifts, we could keep production people out of GP from 1AM to 3AM and not interfer with the process.

The process was based on a scheduled job that was launching GP with a macro to start the MRP generation. Drawback was that if sometimes the session crashed or hung, the MRP generation had to be killed when we came in the first hours in the morning.

That was in GP 8.5, I don't know if that has changed / improved, as we don't use MRP Generation in my current company.

I was told to setup MRP auto generation every night and not run it while users are active in GP.
