Hi,

We are about to do in house Implementation of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, all of our database is in two locations at SQL Server. We want to import that data into Microsoft Dynamics NAV integrated environment. For this we have to open data ports but I want to know detail tutorial on this.

in your case is "Implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013" by Laura Nicolàs Lorente is maybe a better choice. chapters about basics, nav administration and data migration are included. the book "application design" by mark brummel is a very good book for solution design and development, because mark brummel is one of the leading software architects. maybe a good choice later on for you.

Which book do you prefer "Implementing Microsoft Dynamics Nav by Laura" or

    "Application Design By Mark Brummel"

    hi,

    * start with a nav cronus database

    * then check how to work with nav

    * then best buy a nav dev. book (mark brummel, ...)

    * then import your customer/vendor/item data step by step following

      msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh179459(v=nav.70).aspx

      msdn.microsoft.com/.../dn848428.aspx

    * then design the needed reports

    * so, set up your nav environment step by step, work with the current nav database

    * and change the system and the data only if needed

    * it will last some time, but it is possible

    * ... and ... it is ok to make failures.

Hi Tharanga yes I am currently working on business process mapping. We want to do in house implementation and I am doing research on that. Please let me know of any material on internet regarding data migration to nav from legacy sql server

    Thanks

I don't think partners will charge a lot for just simple implementation without any customizations. However before starting the implementation just check whether the NAV business process and your business process map each other. If not you need to do the modifications or setup changes.

If you need any help let us know.

Thanks for your response. Actually partners charged too much for customization and we are a small company cannot afford that much. So that is why we decided to go for in-house implementation. I know data migration is a big task but want to learn how it can be done on Microsoft Dynamics Nav.

I think you should go with a partner. Total success of the project depend on how well the setup is happened in NAV.  If one setup is missing or not been set properly then your entire implementation will be a mess.

Addition to that as Archer said you need to identify the business process, master tables, data tables and so on. So as a start I think you should go with a partner.

If you want to read about NAV implementation please do refer following books :

not nav: define, which data you need. then export the (master) tables, so that you can import them into nav using rapid services. for import you need the correct data format. to get that, export a sample of the target table so that you get the structure.

for rapid services there are a couple of tutorials (msdn, youtube).

books: look for books of Mark Brummel or David Studebaker.

In last case where legacy software is not nav. Can we do with out the assistance of nav partners. If yes then can I find these tutorials in any book or internet.

RE: Import SQL legacy data to Dynamics NAV

if the legacy software is not an old nav version, it's needed that you export the data to csv, xml or excel data files, which can then be imported to Nav. if the old software is an old nav version, it's just a standard nav migration process often described.

The main issue is, that it is not possible to import nav data directly into the sql database used by nav, because when inserting data many business processes start, which means, many additional data is created. if inserting/importing data directly to the database you miss these processes.

in the case "legacy software is not nav", you'll need assistance of an experienced nav partner to setup a correct nav database with your data starting with the base data Customers, Vendors, Addresses, Items, Prices, etc.
