to import data you can that with the nav rapid services (import/export data from excel).

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../dn848428.aspx

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh179428(v=nav.71).aspx

other option is the usage of xmlports.

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd338846(v=nav.70).aspx

    Check this link : www.youtube.com/watch

Following are the main options you have.

    1. Use RapidStart : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4bOuKCODYY

    2. Use XML port to import your data to 81 table.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd338846.aspx

Easiest way is using the rapidstart.

Thanks Archer actually I want to know I have database in SQL server 2012 and it is connected with legacy software. For us to migrate data we have to migrate each table one by one or their are other option available like ODBC or SQL replication

    thanks

if the legacy software is not an old nav version, it's needed that you export the data to csv, xml or excel data files, which can then be imported to Nav. if the old software is an old nav version, it's just a standard nav migration process often described.

The main issue is, that it is not possible to import nav data directly into the sql database used by nav, because when inserting data many business processes start, which means, many additional data is created. if inserting/importing data directly to the database you miss these processes.

in the case "legacy software is not nav", you'll need assistance of an experienced nav partner to setup a correct nav database with your data starting with the base data Customers, Vendors, Addresses, Items, Prices, etc.

not nav: define, which data you need. then export the (master) tables, so that you can import them into nav using rapid services. for import you need the correct data format. to get that, export a sample of the target table so that you get the structure.

for rapid services there are a couple of tutorials (msdn, youtube).

books: look for books of Mark Brummel or David Studebaker.

I think you should go with a partner. Total success of the project depend on how well the setup is happened in NAV.  If one setup is missing or not been set properly then your entire implementation will be a mess.

Addition to that as Archer said you need to identify the business process, master tables, data tables and so on. So as a start I think you should go with a partner.

If you want to read about NAV implementation please do refer following books :

Thanks for your response. Actually partners charged too much for customization and we are a small company cannot afford that much. So that is why we decided to go for in-house implementation. I know data migration is a big task but want to learn how it can be done on Microsoft Dynamics Nav.

I don't think partners will charge a lot for just simple implementation without any customizations. However before starting the implementation just check whether the NAV business process and your business process map each other. If not you need to do the modifications or setup changes.

If you need any help let us know.

Hi Tharanga yes I am currently working on business process mapping. We want to do in house implementation and I am doing research on that. Please let me know of any material on internet regarding data migration to nav from legacy sql server

    Thanks
