I'm thinking of writing an AX7 kanban control

Hi,

This is a question for all you manufacturing experts out there. I'm thinking of writing an AX7 kanban control, and then put it up as a community addition (free). I don't know manufacturing at all. All I know is that in AX 2012 there's a kanban control for lean manufacturing, do we have the same control for AX7? The other alternative I've thought of is to write a schedule control like the one in outlook (day, work week, etc).

I'm also open for control ideas or suggestions. I've already built several controls for AX7. What makes my AX7 controls different is that I use the HTML5 Canvas instead of the DOM.

    Hi Julio,

    Quote from ax.help.dynamics.com/.../:

"This update of Dynamics 365 for Operations doesn’t support the visual scheduling board for lean work cells. Kanban jobs are now scheduled through a list page."

The kanban control has been implemented in a different way.

Thank you for your reply Andre. In your opinion what works best: the AX 2012 Kanban or the new AX7 list page?

    Hi Julio,

I haven't really worked with Kanban in both versions. I do know the concepts, but cannot judge on the changes.

Hi Julio, the Kanban board in AX 2012 looked great, and had a very nice drag'n'drop scheduling feature. Waiting jobs could be dragged on to the board representing the work cell and they occupied time slots representing their load. Colour coded too! I thought it would be great to have that sort of functionality for production orders, but it never arrived.

However, I never implemented it, and maybe it got dropped because there simply aren't that many implementations of AX that used Lean. Personally I have no idea how many there are out there, but look at this forum and you won't see that many threads on Lean.

These sorts of drag'n'drop form controls weren't available in the first version of Dynamics 365 for Operations, but they are starting to become available now, but if you're thinking of doing your own development why not do an app based on the Common Data Model?

    Thank you your reply Tim.

I'll definitely look into the CDM, until now I thought it was data only. I did not know it had integration with applications.

    Hi Julio,

I think that making a control similar to a calendar would be a great value.

Make it also able to handle replanning of jmgJobTable and prodRouteJob entities and you've got a generic visual production planner that would be easilly sold through AppSource.

    Hi Fredrick,

I've already started development on both (the Kanban & the calendar - outlook type scheduler). I will have working prototypes for them soon. I plan to release them with an MIT license. I will look at those two entities. Thanks Fredrick. That helps me a lot.

We're using Ax 2012 and we want to use Kanban, but I'm concerned about future compatibility - if we would ever upgrade to a newer version of Ax.

Do you think this will still work, and be backwards compatible?

As I understand from this article, docs.microsoft.com/.../lean-manufacturing-overview , it is supported in newer versions of Ax.

But we want to use the Kanban Schedule Board and Process Boards - so we'll want those in the future as well.

    Any thoughts?

Apparently in AX7 (D365 for Operations) they don't have any Kanbans for manufacturing, look at the reply from Tim Schofield.
