Authentication issue when using SMTP in D365 FO

Posted on by 332

I hope someone can assist me with an issue we have been experiencing with mail authentication when attempting to send reports, like invoices and quotations, to customers via email. I am a non-technical consultant to apologies in advance if any of these things should be obvious.

I have configured our email parameters in D365 FO

When I test the connection I get the following error: Mail authentication failed. Please verify your SMTP user name and password. If your SMTP server doesn't support authentication, please clear the SMTP user name and password. Server smtp.office365.com:587 using SSL/TLS supports the following authentication options: LOGIN, XOAUTH2.

You get the same error when generating a sales quote, for example, and using print management to email the document to your customer

Printing of documents and delivering via emails were working when last I tested it a while back. Our customer has said that they haven't made any permission changes to the email account.

Are there new authentication protocols that Microsoft has released perhaps that means either our setup or the permission on the AD account is outdated? I have tried Googling parts of the error message and it does look like their is a new OAuth 2.0 authentication protocol for SMTP, but I am struggling to find clear guides of what needs to be updated on the AD Account or within D365,

Any assistance is always greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

make sure that authentication password is re/filled by the user account with authenticated SMTP Marked/Enabled.

Kindly follow these steps to set up SMTP authentication:
    • Go to Admin.Microsoft.com
    • Log in with a security Admin, Global Admin
    • Expand Users > Active Users
    • Click the User that will connect as SMTP
    • Click the Mail Tab
    • Click on Manage Email Apps
    • Make sure that Authenticated SMTP is Marked/Enabled
Please note that additional setting may be under: Microsoft 365 admin center under Org settings | Modern Authentication | Authenticated SMTP Mark/Enable Authenticated SMTP

Enable or disable SMTP AUTH in Exchange Online | Microsoft Learn

    Hi Liese-Marie Heyns,

Good to know that SMTP is working fine with you.

Also, have you tried with the Batch email provider with "Exchange" ?

In the end I think it was the new OAuth authentication methodology that caused the error. I don't know what the exact resolution was, but our client needed to accept some conditions on the Microsoft AD permissions side and reset the password.

It is now working correctly again.

    Hi Liese,

Did you also ping smtp.office365.com working fine?

This issue could be related with the SMTP authentication submission which can be disabled:docs.microsoft.com/.../authenticated-client-smtp-submission
