Aging Reports

ReportReport
Posted on by 700

We are on GP10.  Our AR Aging reports take almost 5 minutes to run, which seems long.  The real issue is, there's no indication the report is actually running (no hour glass or anything) which causes us to try running it again.  We're new users so we're finally getting used to being patient while this report runs.  Is anyone else having this issue (no indication that a report is actually running).  Anything we can do about it?

    Ellen,

What specific report are you running (there are 4 different AR Aging reports) and how many pages is the report when it's done?  I have seen the AR Historical Aged Trial Balance (the most resource intensive of the 4, but also my personal favorite) take over an hour to run.  There are many variables that can contribute to the time it takes, among some of the top ones we've seen are: printer capabilities, printer drivers, printer server, network load, SQL server configuration.  If this is the only thing that you find slow about GP, the printer is where I would look first.

Also, do you print directly to the printer?  If so, try printing to the screen first - that might take a lot less time and from there you can print to the printer, knowing the report has been generated already.

Finally, you can see if GP is actually doing something (sometimes you're not sure if you actually hit the print button when it seems like nothing is happening) by going to Microsoft Dynamics GP > Tools > Process Monitor.  If a report is being processed, there will be an entry for it in the Process list.

    Hope that helps.

Very helpful!  Thank you.  Good to know there's somewhere to go and see if the report is running.

We are running an aged trial balance with options (excluding zero activity, zero balance, fully paid, unposted credits).  It's 38 pages and we print to screen first.

    Ellen,

Is this the only thing that you find slow?  What about other reports?  Posting?  Lookups?  Do you have another (bigger/faster) printer to try with?  Even when you print to the screen, GP is using the print driver for the selected printer......so a lot of times that's the culprit.  If you are able to print the same report directly on the SQL server that might give some indication of whether the issue is specific to your computer or your entire GP install.

Typically this kind of stuff is extremely difficult to diagnose in a forum.  If this is something that's important, you may want to start a support incident with Microsoft to see if they can help your IT department troubleshoot the issue.

For comparison - I just printed the Aged Trial Balance with Options on my test computer using GP 10 SP 3 - it was 30 pages and took about 5 seconds to run.  On our live system, using GP 9 SP 3, I ran the same report also in about 5 seconds and it resulted in 50 pages.

One other reason why an age analysis slow is because invoices and payments get applied, but we run on a monthly basis for our large customers that do 25000 to 50000 invoices per month, a paid transaction removal routine, that move the fully applied transactions into history
